  Lord Lieutenant of Rutland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The post was abolished in 1974, the county being administered by the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, but revived in 1997.
Since 1690, all Lords Lieutenant have also been Custos Rotulorum of Rutland.

Catherine Cromwell married Sir Lionel, Lord Tollemache of Helmingham, Suffolk, Godson to Queen Elizabeth and ancestor by Catherine to the Earls of Dysart.
With a "Warrant for Lord Cromwell's commission to be governor and commander as well of all the country of Lecale", granted on 26 September 1605, Lord Cromwell arrived in Ireland as the new Governor of Lecale.
Lord Thomas Cromwell is buried at Tickencote, Rutland, 1653.

Born at Withcote in Leicestershire around 1620, Smith studied at Oxford and Linclon's Inn, and was elected recruiter MP for Leicestershire in November 1645.
In 1651, Smith served as a major of horse in the forces raised by Lord Grey of Groby to defend the Midlands against the invasion by Charles II and the Scots.
Born at Bradgate in Leicestershire, he was the eldest son of Sir John Grey (d.1611) and succeeded as the second Baron Grey of Groby on the death of his grandfather in 1614.

 CIVIC HERALDRY OF ENGLAND AND WALES-LEICESTERSHIRE
The motto again refers to fox hunting, it is placed between a hazel leaf and a red martlet, which refer to Lord Hazlerigg, Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire from 1925 to 1949 and Lieutenant Colnel Sir Robert Martin, Chairman of the County Council from 1924 to 1960.
The ermine chief is from the arms of Ralph, Lord Bassett (1368-1390), one of the founder Knights of the Garter, who had a castle at Sapcote.
The North West Leicestershire District was formed by the amalgamation of the Ashby de la Zouch Urban District, the Ashby Wolds Urban District, the Coalville Urban District, the Ashby de la Zouch Rural District, the Castle Donnington Rural District and the Parish of Ibstock from the Market Bosworth Rural District.

After considerable correspondence with Lord Mowbray, Seagrave and Stourton, and the Richmond Herald of Arms, Mr J P Brooke-Little, and much patient work by Mr Gilbert King and Mr D A Taylor, the above design was approved by the Kings of Arms.
The cross in the design is the silver cross of the Knights Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem, some of whose land was acquired by the Town Estate in 1549.
Letters patent were handed over to the Townwardens at a ceremony held in Melton Carnegie Museum on 13th May 1978, at which were present Lord Mowbray, Richmond Herald of Arms and the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire.

This was probably the last engagement of the Earl of Stamford's regiment, for on 29 May the Lord's Journal notes that it was ordered that the Earl of Stamford's regiment was to become Colonel Charles Blunt's.
He became a zealous parliamentarian and was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire in 1642.
After securing the county magazine for parliament and moving most of it to his house at Bradgate, he became the first man in the growing conflict to be declared traitor by King Charles.

Lady Gretton (59) is an active President of LOROS (The Leicestershire Organisation for the Relief of Suffering) which runs the hospice covering Leicestershire and Rutland.
She is also involved with other organisations including the CLBA, The Country Land and Business Association, and she has been running the Stapleford Estate since the death of her husband, Lord Gretton, in 1989.
Lady Gretton was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for Leicestershire in May 2001.

Johnnie Jonhson retired from the RAF in March 1966, becoming Chief Executive of a housing trust, deputy Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, as well as a director of various companies and a prolific author.
