Upon the renewal of the Napoleonic Wars (1803), Nelson commanded the British fleet from the deck of the famous flagship H.M.S. Victory.
For 22 months Nelson pursued the French fleet back and forth across the Atlantic until the combined forces entered into the final battle leading to the defeat of the French off of Cape Trafalgar.

Lord Nelson was proposed for the Cross of a Knight Grand Commander of The Order of Saint Joachim by Sir Levett Hanson (1754-1814), who was a schoolfellow of Nelson's at North Walsham Academy.
