  Frederick Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Born at Cawnpore, India on 30 September 1832, Roberts was the son of General Sir Abraham Roberts a member of the famous Waterford city family that contributed so much to the city.
Lord Roberts served as the last Commander-in-Chief of the British Army for three years before the post was abolished in 1904, and for the last ten years of his life was showered with yet more honours, including numerous honorary degrees and the Colonelcy of the National Reserve.
Both his sons having predeceased him, including Frederick Hugh Sherston Roberts VC who was killed in action at the battle of Colenso during the Boer War, Roberts's barony became extinct, but under the special remainder granted with them he was succeeded in the Earldom and Viscountcy by his elder surviving daughter.

Lord Roberts unfortunately contracted a chill during this day, which happened to be very wet and stormy, and when Wilson went to Sir John's house late at night to inquire, he learnt that the doctor took a serious view of his patient's condition as pneumonia was developing.
Lord Roberts was awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry in the face of the enemy while serving as a Lieutenant in the Bengal Horse Artillery (Indian Army) during the Indian Mutiny.
Lord Roberts was honored to serve as the first Colonel of the Irish Guards.

In 1856 Roberts was appointed to the quartermaster-generals department of the staff, in which he remained for twenty-two years, passing from one grade to another until he became quartermaster-general in India.
Roberts distinguished himself at the engagement of Khudaganj, on the 2nd January 1858, by capturing, in single-handed combat, a standard from two sepoys, and also by cutting down a sepoy about to kill a sowar.
Roberts now recommended the political dismemberment of Afghanistan, and negotiations were carried on with the northern tribes for the appointmnt of an emir for the Kabul district only.

My Lords, in Grand Committee we listened very carefully to the arguments put forward for making it a requirement that the Secretary of State consults the Assembly before recommending to Her Majesty the appointment of an ombudsman or acting ombudsman.
In the light of that, I hope that the noble Lord, Lord Roberts, will withdraw Amendment No. 1, which is intended to have the same effect in relation to the appointment of an ombudsman although not, I note, in respect of an acting appointment, for which no equivalent amendment has been tabled.
The noble Lord said: My Lords, it was clear from the amendments that your Lordships proposed in Grand Committee and the level of debate that followed that a considerable amount of thought had been given to the tenure of the ombudsman's appointment.

Born in 1832, the son of the late General Sir Abraham Roberts, G.C.B., young Frederick Sleigh Roberts was educated at Eton and entered the old Bengal Artillery in 1851.
At the outset of the Afghan War of 1878-80 Major-General Roberts was given command first of the Kuram Valley Field Force, next of the Kabul Field Force, and finally of the whole force that marched from Kabul to the relief of Kandahar.
As Commander-in-Chief in India Lord Roberts did much, the full effect of which will not be appreciated for some years to come, but which, none the less, will have an enduring effect upon our military efficiency and Imperial stability.

Serving as a great honour to the regiment, the first Colonel of the Regiment was Field Marshal Lord Roberts, V.C. The honour being conferred in October of 1900.
Roberts at the time of his appointment was still serving in South Africa, so upon his arrival at Paddington Station, London in January of 1901, a Guard of Honour was mounted by the Irish Regiment.

Frederick Sleigh Roberts 1st Earl Roberts 1832 - 1914 better known as Lord Roberts or 'Bobs' was a British soldier.
His death was much mourned in the Kingdom particularly by Rudyard Kipling who wrote a touching eulogy in form of a biography and amongst the troops with whom he had served for years.
I purchased this item when about 2 years ago for my oldest daughter when she moved out of the booster seat.
