Despite his obscurity, Lord Ruthven (pronounced "Rivven") is arguably the single most important character in the history of vampire literature.
Ruthven’s body is revived when it is exposed to the light of the full moon.
Ruthven’s popularity was later overshadowed by J. Sheridan LeFanu’s Carmilla, John Malcolm Ryder’s penny dreadful Varney the Vampire: or the Feast of Blood, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Ruthven, holding a dagger to the King’s breast, upbraided him with the death of his father, and declared that his innocent blood should be avenged.
The vast extent of the possessions of the Ruthven family is shown by the enumeration of their lands and baronies given in the deed of their surrender to the King by the second Earl, A.D. for the purpose of their being resettled upon his eldest son and his heirs male, andc.

Thereat the said Lord was very miscontented; the King slept still till six in the morning, that the Lord Ruthven came and reproved him, that he had not kept his promise to the Queen’s majesty, in lying with her all that night.

John Polidori & the Vampyre Byron
Even the term 'Byronic vampire' shows the influence of Polidori's master, and the fact that Lord Ruthven was based on his benefactor has been taken by some critics to point to a homosexual liaison between the two men.
Ruthven is aristocratic, wealthy, a stranger to the society in which he finds himself, cold, aloof, physically different to the men around him, sexually tempting and alluring, often violent, and remorseless in his quest for the fulfilment of his desires.
I would in fact argue that the creation of Polidori's Lord Ruthven had a similar effect upon the writers of the 19th century as the creation of Bram Stoker's Dracula has had upon writers and film makers of the 20th century.
