Ryder was appointed Acting Chairman of the BBC following the resignation of Gavyn Davies on January 28, 2004.

On Wednesday, Lord Hutton, a senior judge, said in a 740-page report that the BBC had been guilty of careless reporting and poor editorial oversight in a radio broadcast last May 29.
In the broadcast, Andrew Gilligan, a BBC military affairs reporter, said that the government used an intelligence dossier it "probably knew" was wrong in September 2002 to bolster its case for war with Iraq.
Dyke's departure after four years in the job, the newly appointed acting chairman, Lord Ryder, compounded their sense of righteous indignation by issuing a further apology after an emergency meeting of the broadcaster's chastened board of directors.

Robert Edward Dudley Ryder (16 February 1908 – 29 June 1986) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Born in India in 1908, Ryder was the son of Col. Charles Henry Dudley Ryder, R.E. (C.B., C.I.E., D.S.O.), Surveyor General of India.
Both of his brothers, Lisle Charles Dudley Ryder and Ernle Terrick Dudley Ryder, were killed in action during World War II, the first in the massacre at Le Paradis, France in 1940 and the latter in the defence of Singapore in 1942.
