The Lord Speaker is a role elected internally by Members of the House of Lords.
The Lord Speaker assumed some of the responsibilities previously held by the Lord Chancellor, but, unlike the Lord Chancellor, is independent of government in their appointment and role.

Curiously, if the Lords pass a motion for an address to the Queen seeking the Lord Speaker's removal from office, in effect a vote of no confidence and a sacking, the proposals would require that "the Lord Speaker shall be deemed to have resigned".
The Lord Speaker will also receive a pension "in accordance with the normal pension scheme provisions" for ministers and MPs, and entitlement to the "same expenses as paid office-holders in the House of Lords".
