Lord Gareth Williams was appointed Leader of the Lords on 8 June 2001, having been Attorney General since July 1999, and Deputy Leader of the Lords since 1998.
Lord Williams was Opposition Spokesman on Legal Affairs between 1992 and 1997 and Northern Ireland between 1993 and 1997.
Educated at Rhyl Grammar School, and Queen's College Cambridge, Lord Williams is a Fellow of the University College of Wales in Aberystwyth, and was appointed an Honorary Professor of the School of Sociology and Social Policy at the University College of North Wales in 1994.

Williams was born near Prestatyn, in north Wales, a son of Albert Thomas Williams and his wife Selina, née Evans.
Lord Williams married firstly in 1962 Pauline, daughter of Ernest Clarke, and by her had two daughters, Martha (born 1963) and Emma (born 1966), and a son, Daniel (born 1969).

The candidate is then not only able to describe themselves as the Lord Williams Scholarship winner, but is also given the sum of £500 to spend hopefully on the furtherance of their legal career.
