The Young Lords understood that the Puerto Rican community's desire for clean streets was connected to a broader set of community concerns, and that by cleaning the streets they could create the momentum needed to sustain a movement.
The Young Lords, having established a name for themselves as people who listened and got things done, together with the community, were able to translate a revolutionary vision into a movement for transforming the society from the ground up.
The Young Lords developed a theory of patriarchal gender roles and recognized how historically in national liberation struggles, such as those in Algeria, Cuba and Vietnam, male chauvinist ideas taught colonized men that the only way to regain their identity was to dominate women.

To many members of the Young Lords Party, the true essence of the group cannot be found in its fight for socialism, Puerto Rican independence, or even their revolutionary acts.
To these people, The Young Lords Party was a place where they felt comfortable in their surroundings, away from the harsh reality of a white dominated and oppressive system.
The Young Lords appealed to those people who believed in equality and social change, but also appealed to those Puerto Ricans looking for a support group or a place where they could finally learn who they were and where they came from.

On June 7, 1969, the Black Panther newspaper announced an alliance called the Rainbow Coalition (no relation to the later organization of that name associated with (United States civil rights leader who led a national anti-discrimination campaign and ran for presidential nomination (born in 1941)) Jesse Jackson).
Besides the Black Panthers, and what was then the Young Lords Organization, the alliance also included the (Click link for more info and facts about Young Patriots Organization) Young Patriots Organization, a street gang of white youths that had turned political.

Following the example of the Black Panther Party, the Young Lords provided concrete services like breakfast programs, and political education for the community in who had the power and what people had to do to change that.
I joined the Young Lords and I gave 8 years of my life from the age of 16.
The community changes that I've seen that the Young Lords helped initiate: There are breakfast programs in the city schools where there weren't any; there's lead testing citywide, and there's also TB testing citywide where we had to fight to get it done before.

"Lords of Dogtown" leaves out broad swaths of the real story, but in its lo-fi style it manages to capture the feel of the '70s scene without going all mood-ring on us (although the unveiling of the righteous urethane wheel is treated as a rapture worthy of a Rod McKuen poem).

The Young Lords when they formed, they formed because there were other ethnic groups, there was another gang called the Roma Boys, which were major rivals to the Young Lords; there was a tremendous amount of conflict between Puerto Ricans and Italians in the Lincoln Park community of that era.
These young men, they were stripped, pulled away from their tribes, and stripped away of their culture and they come back and they realize their still Indians and so they have to reinvent themselves.

Unlike the Black Panther Party, the Young Lords were not decimated by governmental violence; instead, law enforcement agencies destabilized the organization by exploiting pre-existing rivalries and fomenting factionalism within it.
In fighting for their demands, the Young Lords often resorted to dramatic action, such as commandeering a city medical truck to perform neighborhood tuberculosis tests, or putting trash in the middle of the street when the sanitation department refused to collect it.
If the Young Lords had been connected to the Puerto Rican independence fighters of the 1950s and 1960s, he says, they wouldn't have had to start organizing their campaigns from scratch--they probably would have survived and not been prone to internal warfare.
