Thomas West, 3rd (or 12th) Baron De La Warr (July 9, 1577 - June 7, 1618), was the Englishman for whom the state, river, and American Indian tribe called "Delaware" (in the United States) were named.
He was the son of Thomas West, 2nd Baron De La Warr and Anne Knollys, daughter of Sir Francis Knollys and Catherine Carey.
Lord De La Warr headed the contingent of 150 men who landed in Jamestown on 10 June 1610, just in time to persuade the original settlers not to give up and go home to England.

THOMAS WEST, 3rd or 12th Baron De La Warr (1577-1618), British soldier and colonial governor in America, was born on the 9th of July 1577, probably at Wherwell, Hampshire, where he was baptiied.
Lord De La Warrs rule was strict but just; he constructed two forts near the mouth of the James river, rebuilt Jamestown, and in general brought order out of chaos.
Having inherited his mothers barony of Buckhurst on her death in 1870, he retained this title along with the barony and earldom of De La Warr, although the patent had contained a proviso that it should be kept separate from these dignities.

One source we consulted states that the English allowed the Dutch to name both the Delaware River and the Delaware Bay in honor of Lord de la Warr who was believed to have discovered both on his voyage to Virginia in 1610.
This Lord de la Warr (if you’re wondering) was the first Governor of Virginia, a title he earned for life even though he ultimately returned home to Europe.
