To be appointed a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary under the Appellate Jurisdiction Act, an individual must have been a practising barrister for a period of fifteen years or must have held a high judicial office—Lord Chancellor, or judge of the Court of Appeal, High Court or Court of Session—for a period of two years.

The Racing Appeals Board yesterday took the unprecedented action of calling for written submissions from the parties concerned before reaching a decision on whether Lord Erin should be disqualified from his win at Sandown on March 17.
Lord Erin was disqualified at an inquiry on May 2 after the urine sample in a post-race swab showed the presence of hyoscine and tropyl tropate, prohibited substances under the rules of racing.
The appeal was upheld after it was established that Mistegic had ingested the prohibited substance as a result of contamination in the box he was staying in at Caulfield.

The Lord Chancellor, Lord Irvine, is to appeal against a ruling that he indirectly discriminated against a woman lawyer when he appointed a white male friend to the post of special adviser.
However, Lord Irvine was cleared of direct discrimination against Jane Coker and another woman lawyer, Martha Osamor, who lost their case of sexual and racial discrimination.
They claimed that, because the job was not advertised and Lord Irvine made his choice from a narrow circle of acquaintances, they were not given the chance to apply and were discriminated against.
