Blu-ray Review: Lord of War | High-Def Digest   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
'Lord of War' charts the rise and fall of Yuri Orlov (Nicolas Cage), from his early days in the '80s, running guns to mobsters in Little Odessa, to his rise as a highly successful international arms dealer, to his inevitable downfall amid decadence and violence.
Indeed, 'Lord of War' works just as well as a thriller as it does a drama and as an action movie, however cynical its ultimate worldview may be.
'Lord of War' was originally exhibited theatrically at 2.40:1, but when it came time for its subsequent DVD release, for some reason the folks at Lionsgate chose to transfer the film at a cropped 1.78:1 aspect ratio.

Lord of War can't stop reminding us that gun-running crushes the soul; the movie ultimately crushes itself in a vise of self-loathing.
Lord of War is a two-hour effort to wipe the smirk off Yuri's face.
Lord of War doesn't work as a tragedy or as a comedy, especially since Niccol fills the soundtrack with glib, obvious songs that editorialize on the action (he actually puts Eric Clapton's "Cocaine" on when Vitaly starts his habit).

 Lord of War
It's a point-of-view that feels especially naïve given the lengths to which Niccol goes to make Lord of War a scathing indictment of the way men rationalize away the evisceration of their better selves in the pursuit of trophy wives, Hyde Park penthouses, and borrowed ethnic identity.
Lord of War is a trippy, high-budget public service announcement shot like a luxury car commercial and narrated by an A-lister with a liberal agenda but not enough artistic integrity to portray a person he despises as genuinely despicable.
The problem isn't that it's controversial, but that it isn't controversial at all; pity that Lord of War is actually a pretty fair representation of the current state of America's Democratic platform: flaccid, conciliatory, and AWOL.

Lord of War Movie Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
In "Lord of War," Director Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, Truman Show, S1m0ne) shines his cinematic spotlight on the shadowy world of illicit arms trafficking - a global scourge that has claimed millions of lives since the end of the Cold War.
Yet despite its Hollywood feel, "Lord of War" is an excellent introduction to the opaque and oft-ignored activities of the merchants of death, or lords of war.
That said, "Lord of War" is an edgy, innovative and darkly humorous film that appeals to lay audiences and policy analysts alike.

Director Andrew Niccol’s latest film, “Lord of War,” is one giant public service announcement on the how-to of gunrunning.
