Lordosis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lordosis (commonly referred to as swayback or hyper-lordosis) is a medical term used to describe an inward curvature of a portion of the vertebral column.
Two segments of the vertebral column, namely cervical and lumbar, are normally lordotic, that is, they are set in a curve that has its convexity in front and concavity behind, in the context of human anatomy.
Lordotic curvatures of the vertebral column, also known as secondary curvatures are caused mainly because of the difference of thickness between the anterior and posterior part of the intervertebral disc.

In March 1992, the RO issued a new rating decision that restored the evaluation for angioedema with chronic pressure urticaria to 10 percent, and retained a noncompensable evaluation for arthralgia of the lumbar spine with exaggeration of the lordotic curvature.
The issue of entitlement to restoration of a compensable evaluation for arthralgia of the lumbar spine with exaggeration of the lordotic curvature is the sole issue before the Board on this appeal.
Arthralgia of the lumbar spine with exaggeration of the lordotic curvature is not accompanied by any functional limitation or objective demonstration such as limitation of motion or pain manifested by muscle spasm.

If the lordotic curve is flexible (when the child bends forward the curve reverses itself) it is generally of little medical significance.

Lordotic curves refer to the inward curve of the lumbar spine (just above the buttocks).
A small degree of both kyphotic and lordotic curvature is normal. Too much kyphotic curving causes round shoulders or hunched shoulders (Scheuermann's disease).
If the lordotic curve is flexible (when the child bends forward the curve reverses itself) it is generally not a concern.

Mobility is evaluated, especially reversal of the concave lumbar lordotic curve on forward bending.
Musculoskeletal dysfunction resulting from the prolonged assumption of a posture that enhances the lordotic curve in the lumbar and lower thoracic spine and exaggerates the anterior tilt of the pelvis are most commonly associated with the development of chronic pelvic pain symptoms.
This common pattern of faulty posture is associated with typical patterns of muscle imbalance involving the abdominal muscles, thoracolumbar fascia, lumbar extensors, hip flexors and hip abductors and extensors as well as the muscles of the pelvic floor.

Further, where an attending physician determines that fusion is desirable and further determines that increased lordosis is desirable, the present invention is directed towards an apparatus and method for both fusing the spine and for increasing the amount of lordosis between the vertebrae to a degree of separation determined by the attending physician.

STRUCTURAL INJURY TOLERANCE OF THE SPINE: STABILITY AND LUMBAR LORDOSIS IN LIFTING   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Hence, the risk of structural failure and spinal injury is related to the lordotic curvature as a function of the applied load and muscle stiffening capacity.
Hence, the model suggests a minimum initial lordotic curve or increased muscle co-contraction is necessary to maintain stability at flexed trunk angles.
These results confirm our hypotheses that 1) the stability of the lumbar spine during lifting exertions is influenced by the lordotic shape of the spine, and 2) the curvature of the spine necessary to maintain stability changes with trunk flexion angle.

This type of curve is the opposite of a "lordotic" curve in the spine.
If the cervical or lumbar spines lose their lordotic shape and start to curve forward instead, it is an abnormal condition referred to as "kyphosis".
As mentioned above, the cervical spine naturally has a lordotic curve, so a kyphotic spinal deformity means there is an abnormal forward curvature to that part of the spine.

Any disturbance of the cervical lordotic curvature will result in symptoms as far ranging as localized slight to severe pain to radicular pain from the neck into the shoulders, arms and hands, numbness, muscular weakness, even paralysis.
Linear traction is successful in vertebral segment separation and disc bulge and herniation reduction but to the detriment of normalizing lordotic curvatures, evacuating neurotoxins and infiltration of the disc with fresh nutrients and oxygen.
By applying a traction force that normalizes the lordotic curvature rather than a linear force, which flattens or decreases the lordotic curvature, the proprioceptor neural fibers and nociceptor fibers are not activated and segment separation occurs without muscular resistance and to a greater distance of separation.

The objective of the study was to determine whether a difference exists in cervical lordotic alignment between subjects undergoing single-level ACDF with and without anterior cervical plating instrumentation for symptomatic cervical disc disease.
Collapse or settling of grafted bone into the vertebral endplates with resulting kyphotic deformity of the cervical spine is a commonly described complication of anterior discectomy and fusion.
Despite the increasing use of instrumentation for the treatment of cervical spine injuries and degenerative conditions, little is known regarding lordotic alignment of the cervical spine in patients who receive plating instrumentation compared with conventional fusion without plating.

ABSTRACT   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
In essence, the lost ability to "flex" (go chin to chest) properly at the upper neck levels is compensated for by the lower neck going into hyper-flexion (these vertebrae "bend" into a flattened ot even a forward curve).
Unfortunately, this further distorts the lordotic curve of the the neck and thrusts the head forward from its normal position.
Something that isn't thought about too often is that the spinal cord is actually only "tethered" to the bony skeleton in the upper cervical and lowest sacral areas (top and bottom ends of the spine).

Actually, it is practically impossible to bend the spine forward into a uniform curve, and the forward flexion of the spine is extremely limited if you suppress the lordoses.
Therefore, the correct treatment for hunchback is to lengthen the hollows, not to straighten the bump.
In the "bent posture of old age" it is not the spine that is flexed but the torso as a whole, at the hips joints.

One group of patients received fusions using the conventional method of simply placing a bone graft between the vertebral bodies after discectomy; the second group received an anterior cervical screw plate fastened to the adjacent vertebral bodies while covering the bone graft.
Although both groups demonstrated improved overall lordotic alignment and improved lordotic alignment at the surgical site immediately after surgery, the long-term follow-up demonstrated that those patients who did not receive a plate were more likely to develop a kyphotic deformity after healing was completed.
Along with sharing the gravitational load generated on the graft, that bend likely helps maintain the lordotic curve.
