Whatever else Lords of Dogtown is, it's a chronicle of a brief moment in American teen culture.
Roughly, Lords of Dogtown spans from 1975 to about 1977; Richard Linklater's modern classic Dazed and Confused falls squarely in the middle of that time frame, and Dogtown has a similar restless energy, powered by comfortably familiar guitar riffs.
I missed that one, but what attracted me to Lords of Dogtown was its gifted director, Catherine Hardwicke, a former production designer (she worked on two Linklater films as well as the brilliantly cluttered Tank Girl) who made her directorial debut in 2003 with the fiercely moving drama Thirteen.

 Lords of Dogtown
Lords of Dogtown, while slickly made and edited, lacks the depth and entertaining value of the far superior documentary on the same subject, Dogtown and Z-Boys.
Lords Of Dogtown is true to its roots, and a pure buzz.
Lords of Dogtown is as beautifully structured as one of the Z- Boys' graceful and intricate maneuvers.

 LORDS OF DOGTOWN
In these ways, LORDS OF DOGTOWN could be aptly described as skates-ploitation – it sort of celebrates and shuns these kids, but the more I watched the film the more I got the impression that it was getting a bit too self-congratulatory with these kids than it really should have been.
For what it is, LORDS OF DOGTOWN does allow us to like its characters, despite their penchant for self-absorbing tendencies, like catching “big air” however they could, often while disrespecting the law.
LORDS OF DOGTOWN looks sensational, but on a story and character level the film falls sort of flat and lies lethargically.

 Lords of Dogtown (2005): Reviews
Lords of Dogtown is a docudrama, rare in its grit and authenticity, that also strives for the mythical youth-rebel excitement of something like "8 Mile."
Although Catherine Hardwicke, the director of Lords of Dogtown, has a good sense for the period and does what she can with her actors, we've seen the originals, and these aren't the originals.
If Lords of Dogtown accomplishes nothing else, it shows how hard writing a fiction film can be, and what a vast artistic distance can stand between a bad fiction film and the first-rate documentary that inspired it.

The fact that Lords of Dogtown only did about $11 million at the box office earlier this summer is a shame—it's one of the most powerful and compelling coming-of-age dramas to be released in recent years.
Lords of Dogtown is at times very detailed, most notably in the depiction of the events that occur during the summer of 1976, and especially in comparison to the above-mentioned documentary.

TheMovieBoy Review - Lords of Dogtown (2005)
A dramatic retelling of 2001's documentary, "Dogtown and Z-Boys," "Lords of Dogtown" recounts the true story of a group of aimless Venice, California, teens in the mid-1970s, labeled the Z-Boys, who skyrocket to stardom amidst the rise of the skateboarding/surfing culture.
In the free-floating, improvisational style with which director Catherine Hardwicke tackles "Lords of Dogtown," the film reminds of 1997's "Boogie Nights," with skateboarding replacing the world of pornography.
Minor inconsistencies and downfalls aside, "Lords of Dogtown" is an enthralling, dynamic motion picture, getting just right the touchy friendships that only boys of around sixteen can share, and with a number of rousingly choreographed skateboarding sequences that, more often than not, really look like the actors doing their own stunts.

This is heightened by the fact the same subject was already captured in 2001’s “Dogtown and Z-Boys.” That documentary was directed by skater Stacy Peralta, who also wrote the screenplay of this new feature.
Admittedly, a haze of nostalgia permeates the effort, and there’s a sense that the boys’ rambunctious behavior is exaggerated for dramatic effect.
Not a whole lot happens in “Dogtown.” And the film is populated with characters who don’t have much going on in the personality department — a drawback that is probably closer to reality than some Hollywood-ized version that might force-feed quirky traits onto the kids.

The Z-Boys were a group of Venice Beach teenagers who, in the 1970's, pioneered a whole new style of skateboarding that is still popular today and which earned the boys status as instant international celebrities (at least within the tightly circumscribed world of skating).
In 2001, one of the original members of the group, Steve Peralta, wrote and directed a documentary on the boys entitled "Dogtown and Z-Boys," which featured interviews with many of the original members of the group.
"Lords of Dogtown" is moderately informative to those who know next to nothing about the history of skateboarding, but I imagine it is the true aficionado of the sport who will get the most enjoyment out of the movie

SPLICEDwire | "Lords of Dogtown" movie review (2005) "Lords of Dogtown" review, Catherine Hardwicke, Heath Ledger, ...
"Lords of Dogtown" is a fictionalized account of the birth of modern skateboarding that doesn't have half the spontaneity and maverick spirit of the vivid, kinetic, crowd-pleasing documentary that inspired it.
2002's "Dogtown and Z-Boys" (now available in an excellent DVD) was an adrenaline-rush history of the Zephyr Skateboarding Team, a daredevil band of teenage surf bums who were the first to take wave-riding moves to the streets and empty swimming pools of drought-stricken Santa Monica in the early 1970s.
To be fair, measuring up to the wild imagination of "Dogtown and Z-Boys" would be almost impossible for any fictional flick saddled with keeping track of a narrative plot.

Stacy is one of the Z-Boys who emerge from Dogtown, a tough section of Venice, Calif., in the 1970s.
"Lords of Dogtown" tracks the three as they ride those wheels into extreme sports, fame, stretch limos, trips around the world, businesses or -- for one Z-Boy -- an unwillingness to trade skill for the sweet smell of success.
A fictionalized story should have more wiggle room to explore what motivated the skaters and their hangers-on, but "Lords of Dogtown" seems to omit some key chapters, fails to pepper the action with insight and assumes a familiarity with minor players, such as the flashy businessmen who try to woo the boys.

The film, directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen), is a slightly fictionalized retelling of the award-winning 2001 documentary Dogtown and Z Boys.
Not surprising, considering Lords was written by skateboard legend Stacy Peralta, who also wrote and directed Z Boys.
The film traces the rise of skateboarding in the late '70s to a trio of barrio surf-rats who lived in Dogtown, the bad part of Venice Beach, Calif. - the ambitious Peralta (John Robinson), the egotistical Tony Alva (Victor Rasuk) and the uncompromising Jay Adams (Emile Hirsch).

Lords of Dogtown, a film by Catherine Hardwicke
It turns out that Lords of Dogtown, far from being "overkill," is a very good movie.
Of course, consider that I have an unusual fondness for both skateboard movies and surf movies (I have the possibly eccentric belief that John Milius's Big Wednesday is one of the forgotten classics of 1970's cinema), of which Lords is both.
Another aspect of ethnicity in the film is the odd phenomenon, as dramatized by the Jay Adams character, of mostly Anglo punk rock culture appropriating some of the aspects of vato culture.

Lords of Dogtown focuses on Stacy Peralta (John Robinson), Tony Alva (Victor Rasuk) and Jay Adams (Emile Hirsch).
While Barsuk and Robinson's characterizations veer a bit too close to familiar archetypes, Hirsch and Ledger, along with some nice supporting work from the rest of the ensemble, are able to ground the movie in some real emotion as Engblom's creation leaves him behind and Adams' passion can't outpace his demons.
