Lorne Pierce of Ryerson Press and Canadian Art, 1920-1950 - July/August 2003 - Bulletin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Lorne Pierce (1890-1961) was a major figure in Canadian publishing for 40 years as editor of the Ryerson Press, one of Canada’s oldest and most important publishing houses.
With Robson as author, three booklets on Cornelius Krieghoff, J.E.H. MacDonald and Tom Thomson were launched in 1937, with Pierce’s philosophy of cultural nationalism evident in the texts.
After Robson’s sudden death in that same year, the series continued with authors Marius Barbeau, Thoreau MacDonald, Donald Buchanan, William Colgate and other leading art historians and artists of the time writing profiles on artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

 DVD Times - Earthquake
There are, of course, notes of seriousness in the film but these are dealt with in the manner of Sue Ellen's alcoholism in Dallas, not by a tide of water - that comes later - but by one of acting that strains the reputation of the profession.
The effects, though clearly of a pre-ILM quality, aren't bad and Robson and Albert Whitlock, his FX supervisor, do well to convincingly destroy much of Los Angeles, making their crumbling city the star of the film.
Like all the best disaster movies, not even the city of Los Angeles, the burning star of this film, is safe and if you watched the LA riots and the looting of Frederick's of Hollywood with no small amount of pleasure, you'll find much to enjoy here.

 Amazon.ca: Earthquake: DVD: Mark Robson,Jr. Pedro Armendariz,Alexander Brown,Geneviève Bujold,Bob Cunningham,Gabriel ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Mark Robson's direction gives the film a professional veneer but his pacing of the material is weak, especially in the second half of the film, and the film's flat, t.v.-style cinematography and studio backlot sets give it the look of a hastily-assembled t.v.
The lackluster storytelling isn't helped by the film's star-happy approach to casting: for example, Ava Gardner plays Lorne Greene's daughter despite the fact they are only a few years apart in age.
On the positive side, the film's earthquake sequence is handled in an impressive, fx-heavy style and the post-destruction of images of L.A. are often quite stunning thanks to excellent visual effects by Albert Whitlock.

Gary Westfahl's Bio-Encyclopedia of Science Fiction Film: Lorne Greene
William SHATNER and Lorne Greene were both born in Canada, and both starred in science fiction series, but there the resemblance ends.
For all his faults, Shatner always took an active and passionate role in shaping the shows he was in; Greene was a lazy actor who came to the set every morning, did whatever he was told to do, and went home at the end of the day without giving the matter any further thought.
Today, Lorne Greene may still be cherished by western fans for his role in Bonanza, but for science fiction fans, he is memorable only as an excellent example of everything a science fiction actor shouldn't be.

If there was one thing that guaranteed bums on seats during the 70s it was disaster films.
But while he sank cruise liners and wreaked havoc in a skyscraper, producer and director Mark Robson went that bit further and reduced Los Angeles to rubble in "Earthquake".
Heading up the stellar cast is the rock solid Charlton Heston whose skills as a construction engineer come in handy as LA sways and buckles when the great 'quake strikes.

dOc DVD Review: Peyton Place (1957)
Audiences hankering for a sultry soap opera got their money's worth, even if Mark Robson's glossy production severely watered down Grace Metalious' scandalous novel of small-town life.
Director Robson also errs by transforming a hot-button soap into a full-blown epic.
Though it seems rather tame today, Mark Robson's film remains an engrossing (if overlong) saga distinguished by sterling performances and glossy production values.

Pauline Kael wrote, "the picture is swill, but it isn't a cheat; it's an entertaining marathon of Grade-A destruction effects, with B-picture stock characters spinning through it." However, a far more ambitious stunt was attempted in the casting of Ava Gardner as Lorne Greene's daughter.) 123 minutes.

Recently I witnessed one of the most peculiar but pedestrian, unintentionally comic but deadly serious, brilliantly camp yet largely unfunny, tense and plodding, surprisingly epic but cramped, overacted but not quite over-the-top movies I've ever seen.

No, none of this namby-pamby artsy-fartsy title rubbish - this is a disaster movie, and damn it, the disaster is the star, not these washed-up celebrities.
When it came time for producer-director Mark Robson to think of titles for his big-scale disaster flick about an earthquake, then, you can be pretty sure they didn’t waste time mulling over whether it should be called To Richter With Love or Did The Earth Move For You Too?
One of the writers is first-timer George Fox (who would never write another screenplay).
