 Clan: Macdougall
This brooch, known as the brooch of Lorne, remains in possession of the MacDougals to the present day, and is the last tangible evidence of the ancient greatness of their house.
It was pointed out to the Queen that he was wearing on his shoulder the famous Brooch of Lorne, and at Her Majesty’s request it was handed to her and examined with the utmost interest.
On the occasion of the Scottish Historical Exhibition at Glasgow in 1911 the brooch was lent for exhibition, and a copy of it in gold, half the size of the original, was made and presented to Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Connaught, who accompanied the Duke on the occasion of his opening the Exhibition.

 The Lorne Scots
The Halton Rifles was reorganized as the Lorne Rifles (Scottish) in 1931 and permission was received from His Grace the Duke of Argyll, the senior Duke of Scotland, to use his personal crest, the Boar's Head and his personal tartan, the Ordinary Campbell.
On 15 December 1936, following a general reorganization of the Militia, the Lorne Rifles and the Peel and Dufferin Regiment were amalgamated to form the present regiment, The Lorne Scots (Peel, Dufferin and Halton Regiment).
The Lorne Scots was one of the first units in Canada to be mobilized in 1939, proceeding overseas in January 1940.

 Clan Campbell History
On that date James VI of Scots, son of Mary Queen of Scots, inherited the throne of England on the death (without children) of Henry VIII's daughter Queen Elizabeth, and so James became James VI of Scots and I of England, so bringing about an initial degree of unity between Scotland and England.
Like most Scots, all Campbells are a blend of races through maternal ancestry, although there were times from the 16th through the 18th centuries when, among some leading families in Argyll and Perthshire, they had grown so numerous as frequently to intermarry, intensifying their characteristics as a kin.
In the second half of the nineteenth century Lord Lorne, heir to the 8th Duke, married Queen Victoria's daughter and was Governor General of Canada.

Outside stood the Marquis of Lorne, just two years old, a dear, white, fat, fair little fellow, with reddish hair, but very delicate features, like both his father and mother; he is such a merry, independent little child.
Soon after this event, the Marquis of Lorne was mentioned in connection with the governor-generalship of Canada, and it was generally believed that he would be the successor of Sir John Young, but the appointment was finally given to Lord Dufferin.
Upon the expiration of the latter's term of office, however, it was deemed expedient to offer the appointment to the marquis for various reasons, and he and his Royal wife were received in the Dominion with great popular demonstrations of welcome.

The Lorne Scots are working on a history of the regiment; here are some excerpts of the 'work in progress'.
The official lineage of The Lorne Scots goes back to 1866, but there was much militia activity in Peel, Halton and Dufferin counties from the time of their first settlement.
In July, a Lorne Scot concentration was held, then Maj Drennan admitted to 5th Cdn CGS; he was found to have serious injury to his spinal column, and on 3 August Major S. Beatty assumed command.

 Lorne Sausage Scottish Square Slices Sausages
It is thought that the Lorne sausage, which also goes by the names of square sausage or sausage slice, was an invention of the Scottish comedian Tommy Lorne who lived from 1890 and died in 1935.
Tommy Lorne performed in many Scottish theatres and often performed in Glasgow and Edinburgh and was much in demand for pantomime.
Lorne sausage may not be the healthiest type of food to eat - but it tastes great.

In the Scots Army were four companies of the “Lyfe Guard of Foot” and in Cromwell’s Army was Monck’s Regiment, now the Coldstream Guards.
Despite a gallant stand by the Scottish Foot Guards, the Scots Army was badly defeated and forced to retire to Stirling.
They became known to the English as the Scotch or Scots Guards and, so legend has it, to the other Guards regiments as “The Kiddies.” After a winter in the south the Battalion returned to Scotland.

Following the amalgamtion of the regiments of the Scottish Division to form The Royal Regiment of Scotland on 28 March 2006, the following hackles are being worn by the regiment's constituent battalions:
It may be that the fl hackle of 1 SCOTS simulates the fl-cock tail feathers originally worn in the 1904 pattern Kilmarnock Bonnet and latterly in the regimental Glengarry Cap by the Royal Scots and King's Own Scottish Borderers, who merged in August 2006 to form 1 SCOTS.
Alternatively, it may be a sympathetic gesture to a former Lowland regiment, the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), disbanded in 1968, who wore a fl hackle in their rifle green dress Balmoral.

 Campbell Clan Crest, Motto and History from Scots Connection.
To begin with, the Campbells were dominated by the all-powerful Macdougalls of Lorne who were responsible for killing Sir Colin in 1296.
In 1457, his grandson Colin was created 1st Earl of Argyll and through marriage acquired the Lordship of Lorne and one third of the Lorne estates, which included the ancient castle of Dunstaffnage.
A chapel was constructed outside of the castle walls by the Lords of Lorn.

 32 Canadain Brigade Group
On December 3 members of 32 Canadian Brigade Group began receiving calls at their civilian jobs warning them to begin preparing themselves and their subordinates to deploy for Exercise Crimson Tide which tested the brigade's Domestic Response Unit.
Everything from curious onlookers, to obnoxious media, to drive by shootings were part of the 24-hour routine.
Others such as Corporal Omar Spence, also of the Lorne Scots spent the exercise as part of the Quick Reaction Team, a component of the DRU.

Major Rehill was commissioned in 1976 and assumed command of the Lorne Scots Regimental Band.
From 1982-1986 he was Adjutant of the Lorne Scots.

The County of Glengarry "is almost entirely inhabited by Highlanders and their descendants." The disbanded soldiers of the Glengarry Fencibles raised in Britain, upon disbanding, emigrated to Glengarry, Upper Canada and were a major influence on this effort.
In 1931, the Halton Rifles became the Lorne Rifles (Scottish) and in 1936, both battalions were amalgamated to form the modern Lorne Scots.
A company of native Scots or decedents were raised in New Orleans, Louisiana for the defence of the city.

Following the BB, George went on to join "The Devil Pups," The Cameronians Scottish Rifles; the regiment his father served with through WWII.
After immigrating to Canada, George joined the Canadian Militia, The Lorne Scots Regiment, and following basic training joined the pipe band under the direction of Pipe Major Joe Sellers.
During his time with The Scots, George served on honour guard for Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, and performed in numerous civic events and military ceremonies.

The Anglican Church has played an important role in the history of Elgin County, being early established in the Talbot Settlement at St. Thomas, Tyrconnell, Port Burwell and Port Stanley.
Anglican worship in Aldborough did not begin, however, until 1862, Presbyterians and Convenanted Baptists were among the earliest churches in the township, whose earliest members were Highland Scots.
