Los Alamos Hopes To Lead New Era Of Nuclear Space Tranportion With Jovian Mission
Los Alamos is responsible for such key reactor technologies as nuclear fuel, beryllium components, heat pipes and diagnostic instruments, as well as nuclear criticality testing of development and flight reactors.
Los Alamos and NASA are examining three primary options for core cooling: pumped liquid-metal sodium or lithium; sodium or lithium liquid metal heat pipes; and inert helium or helium-xenon gas.
Los Alamos develops and applies science and technology to ensure the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear deterrent; reduce the threat of weapons of mass destruction, proliferation and terrorism; and solve national problems in defense, energy, environment and infrastructure.

Los Alamos National Laboratory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Los Alamos is one of two laboratories in the United States where classified work towards the design of nuclear weapons is undertaken.
The laboratory was founded during World War II as a secret, centralized facility to coordinate the scientific research of the Manhattan Project, the Allied project to develop the first nuclear weapons.
Los Alamos' nuclear work is currently thought to relate primarily to computer simulations and stockpile stewardship.

Although Los Alamos had been selected as the site of the laboratory that would design nuclear weapons for the Manhattan Engineer District (MED), it was not until December 2, 1942, that Enrico Fermi and his group at the metallurgical laboratory at the University of Chicago achieved an experimental demonstration of a chain reaction.
As Los Alamos was being set up in the spring of 1943, he and his associates at Berkeley turned their attention to spontaneous fission in uranium and plutonium.
Although Los Alamos scientists believed the rate reported was too high, and probably due to impurities in polonium that were difficult to remove, Oppenheimer and the other members of the Laboratory's governing board agreed to give Segre' all the necessary facilities to pursue their research in Pajarito Canyon.

Under his leadership, the laboratory recovered from the postwar doldrums and became internationally renowned for advanced research and development in a variety of fields.
Laboratory staff also tested several exploratory reactor designs, including solid and liquid plutonium fuels and gas-cooled uranium reactors; performed basic research in the areas of physics, chemistry, and metallurgy; and established a large program in biological and medical health research.
For his inspiring leadership and superb direction of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory throughout one quarter of a century, and for his great contributions to the national security and to the peaceful applications of atomic energy.

For cloud sampling, LASL trailer-mounted equipment was located at approximately 10o intervals between 180 and 270o on arcs at 4,000, 8,000, and 16,000 ft. And at 6, 12, 25, and 50 miles from the test point.
LASL Group H-1 Monitors conducted surveys to measure the location and extent of contamination around the test site and to accurately determine its variation with azimuth and distance from the test point.13 Radiation measurements by LASL were made at accurately surveyed locations, and several serious measurements were made to accurately follow the decay of contamination.
The interest of LASL was to measure the levels of airborne radioactivity and ground deposition, to try to determine its isotopic concentration, and to relate this information to current atmospheric dispersion models to test their validity.

In the postwar period a small number of Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory’s staff and affiliates were responsible for theoretical work on fusion weapons, yet the program was subject to both the provisions and constraints of the U. Atomic Energy Commission, of which Los Alamos was a part.
The Commission leadership’s struggle to establish a mission for its network of laboratories, least of all to keep them operating, affected Los Alamos’s leaders’ decisions as to the course of weapons design and development projects.
I concentrate mainly on Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory’s Theoretical, or T, Division, and its members’ attempts to complete an accurate mathematical treatment of the "Super" -- the most difficult problem in physics in the postwar period -- and other fusion weapon theories.
