Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra (Symphony Orchestra) - Short History
The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra (= LAPO) was founded in 1919 by Los Angeles multi-millionaire and avid amateur musician William Andrews Clark, Jr.
The LAPO benefited from the attraction that California held for European expatriates; following Rothwell, its music directors were Georg Schnéevoigt (1927-1929), Artur Rodzinski (1929-1933), Otto Klemperer (1933-1939), Alfred Wallenstein (1943-1956), and Eduard van Beinum (1956-1959).
That orchestra disbanded two years later, and the LAPO replaced them as the regular orchestra for this series; though many American orchestras offer summer concerts, few have as high a profile in the cultural lives of their cities as this one did (and still does).

Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra - Free Music Downloads, Videos, CDs, MP3s, Bio, Merchandise and Links
In 1964 the LAPO moved into a new home, the Dorothy Chandler Music Pavilion, also in downtown LA. The hall is shared with the Civil Light Opera Association and other concert and theater companies, a situation that has grown uncomfortable and limited for the Philharmonic.
In 1990, the orchestra followed the lead of the Boston Pops by making an organizational distinction between its winter concerts and his summer series by founding the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra from the LA Philharmonic.
The LAPO's music director since 1992 has been Esa-Pekka Salonen, an exciting young Finnish conductor whose programming is built around the great established classics of the 20th Century, the newest music, and a decent representation of earlier music.

Walt Disney Concert Hall - Information
Many musicians from the two local Cologne orchestras (the Gürzeich and the WDR radio orchestra) were to be seen in these rows of seats and even quite a number of fans who had traveled with the orchestra from Los Angeles.
This work is dedicated to the LA Philharmonic Orchestra's new concert hall, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, of which fascinating pictures were available for viewing in the foyer of the Philharmonie in an accompanying exhibition, and its architect, Frank Gehry.
Salonen here used all the strengths of the LA orchestra, and the fabulous soloists; for instance, one could be almost sorry for the sopranos when Salonen kept chasing the ump to F sharp (in the intermission it was possible to get a glimpse of the solo scores on the remote orchestra's music stands).

That was the case with the pairing of the esteemed Los Angeles Philharmonic with Scots indie-pop heroes Belle & Sebastian.
Perhaps it was the strength of the white-jacketed orchestra conducted by Alexander Mickelthwate behind him, or the exhilaration at having the 17,000-capacity outdoor Hollywood Bowl sold out on a clear, beautiful Los Angeles night, but Murdoch was wildly extroverted.
The full power and glory of the orchestra was ultimately revealed on the final number, “Sleep the Clock Around,” when Murdoch held onto the word “shine” as the Phil’s sound suddenly swelled and expanded.

Thomas’ clear-sighted phrasing, heroic stamina, and precise instructions brought out the best in the Los Angeles musicians, who sounded glorious in their spectacular new home.
The symphony is scored for a mammoth orchestra -- the woodwind section alone is the size of a small chamber ensemble -- and the sheer sound of all the activity is one of the composer’s greatest thrill rides.

There was a 'catch,' though - the orchestra didn't really want to play the stuff- they wanted an event; something 'unique'- like-uhh, maybe a rock group and -uhhhh- a real orchestra sort of -uhhh- well you know- 'rocking out together.' It didn't matter what the music was.
