 Bruce Pelz 1936-2002 - SFWA News
Los Angeles science fiction fan Bruce Pelz passed away on Thursday, May 9th.
Bruce was Fan Guest of Honor at nine science fiction conventions including the 1980 World Science Fiction Convention in Boston.
Last Thursday night at the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society meeting, Larry Niven announced the death of an old friend, Bruce Pelz, sometime Chairman of the Board and President of LASFS, for many years the chief money gouger and Treasurer of LASFS, and retired Chief Cataloger of the UCLA Science Library.

 Marc Schirmeister - WikiFur, the furry encyclopedia
An early art contributor to Vootie (the magazine recognized as the precursor for the early 1980's furry fanzines,) he is also credited for the creation (along with John Cawley) of the long running APA Rowrbrazzle.
As a paleo-furry, Schirm was active in science fiction fandom from the early 1970's.

 LASFS THROUGH THE YEARS
The society's origins date back to the nineteen thirties, a time of prosperity -- not financial, of course, that was the era of the Great Depression.
The club would be called the Science Fiction League, and local groups across the nation could become chapters simply by applying to Wonder Stories for a charter.
The society motto is "De Profundis Ad Astra", which, loosely translated, means "from the earth to the stars".

It may well be that "naïve" is not the best word to describe the kind of fan I was as a young man. Given the amount of shock I experienced during an early meeting with a Big Name Author, perhaps a stronger term than "naïve" is in order.
I was eventually to become quite active in the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society, serving two full terms as president of the club and two thirds of a term on the board of directors.
Their token science fiction writer in attendance was to be Ray Bradbury.

He celebrated the West Coast Science Fantasy Conference (Westercon) as his birthday.
The highest achievement award in the s-f community is the Hugo, named for s-f pioneer Hugo Gernsback, voted annually in several categories by members of the World Science Fiction Convention.

Moskowitz's latter teenage years coincide with the latter 1930s; he's a major participant in a lot of the fan history here, particularly the last several years when the first tiny science fiction conventions were held.
The critical early cultural split among SF clubgoers was whether any given organization was to be devoted to science education and science hobbies, or to discussion of science fiction itself.

One member of the club invented a fantasy world known as Coventry, and wrote some fan stories with his own personalized characters in it.

 Article of the Month, March 1999
Recently, Gary Louie, a member of the science-fiction club I frequent, the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society (LASFS), died.
In the wake of his passing, it became very important to a lot of people that something be done to honor his memory.  A memorial service was immediately scheduled at the clubhouse, and a memorial web page was set up at the North American Science Fiction Convention website.
Earl Ofari Hutchinson headlined "Jury's Verdict in Jasper was a Special Case".  Hutchinson's piece damns the police and prosecutors of Jasper, TX with faint praise.  Yes, their actions were commendable this time, but they were "clueless" over whether to call this a "hate crime".

 Samuel E. Konkin III Dies in Los Angeles
On February 23, 2004, Samuel E. Konkin III, prominent libertarian activist, publisher, and science fiction fan, was found dead of natural causes in his Los Angeles apartment, age of 56.
Having recently returned to Los Angeles after a couple of years in Las Vegas, Sam was a an active member of the Vegas SF Association (VSFA) and recent member of SNAFFU (The Southern Nevada Area Fantasy Fiction Union).
As a longtime resident of Los Angeles, Konkin attended the LSFS scores of times over the past 30 years, and was a longtime member of LosCon.

After being feted for the excellence of her contributions to science fiction and creating considerable surprise over the fact that L. Taylor Hansen was a woman, she excused herself to make a telephone call.
So while science fiction fandom now knew that "L. Taylor Hansen" was a woman, the general reading reading public was still led to believe that LTH was male -- intentionally, it seems, through the efforts of editor Ray Palmer at Amazing Stories..

 A History of LOSCON - The Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society Annual Convention
In December 1975 the Los Angeles Science Fantasy prepared LA 2000, a special convention to celebrate the club's 2,000th meeting.
LOSCON was held in Pasadena from 1983 through 1989, in Burbank from 1993 through 2003, and in 2004 it returned to Los Angeles itself.
