The USS LOS ANGELES (SSN-688) is the U.S. Navy's 109th nuclear-powered submarine and the 67th of the attack submarine fleet.  She is the fourth naval ship to bear the name, Los Angeles, and is the lead ship of the largest class of high speed nuclear powered attack submarines in the U.S. Navy's arsenal today.
LOS ANGELES operated with distinction, conducting five Western Pacific, one Indian Ocean, and four Northern Pacific deployments before conducting her first overhaul.  These operations, vital to national security, earned her three additional Meritorious Unit Citations.  Additionally, she was awarded her squadron's annual Battle Efficiency "E" for excellence in combat readiness four times.
During the overhaul, LOS ANGELES was outfitted with the state-of-the-art BQQ-5E Sonar System/CCS MK-II Fire Control System,as well as the Navy's newest reactor core and advanced reactor control equipment.  A special rubber hull treatment was added as a noise-reducing agent effectively making the submarine one of the quietest submarines in the U.S. Fleet today.

SSN 688 class submarines, which will comprise 68% of the attack submarine force in 2015, must be modernized to ensure that they remain effective when operating against increasingly sophisticated undersea adversaries.
The 18 SSN-688 class submarines that will be refueled at their mid-life could make good candidates for a service life extension because they could operate for nearly 30 years after the refueling.
The JCS Submarine Force Structure Study, completed in November 1999, concluded that the optimal force structure would be 68 attack submarines by 2015 and 76 by 2025, with the minimum being at least 55 by 2015 and 62 by 2025.

In 1916 the first submarine used for operations with the fleet was constructed, the S Class submarine.
L Class submarines were used to defend Allied shipping from German U-boats during World War I. World War II During the 1930s the Electric Boat Co. built the Salmon Class submarine that proved to be effective for long range patrols.

The last 23 submarines of the Los Angeles class, called"Improved 688s" (I688s), are quieter, incorporate an advanced combat system and are configured for under-ice operations - their diving planes were moved from the sail to the bow and sail strengthened for breaking through ice.

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (NNS) -- Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Key West (SSN 722), one of four Pacific Fleet submarines to strike at targets in Iraq in Operation Iraqi Freedom, returned to its homeport of Pearl Harbor July 24.
Key West is the 35th Los Angeles-class submarine and was commissioned Sept. 12, 1987.
The Tomahawk missile can be launched using the ship's torpedo tubes, or in the case of later ships of the class, from any of 12 vertical launch tubes located forward of the sail.
