Washington University in St. Louis Magazine
His mother, Carolyn Losos, A.B. '54 and an Arts and Sciences National Council member, was reluctant to have an alligator—or one of its near relations—in her home, but she deferred the question to Charles Hoessle, a friend of Losos' father.
This fall Losos is teaching the new Freshman Seminar in Environmental Studies, as well as co-teaching an earth and planetary sciences course on dinosaurs, which is cross-listed in environmental studies, for nonmajors.
Losos is designing new research studies to examine whether the degree of adaptation observed among Anolis lizards also applies to species in Africa, the southwestern United States, and among isolated populations right near St. Louis.

Organization for Tropical Studies Names New President
Losos comes to OTS from the Smithsonian Institution’s Center for Tropical Forestry Science, where she directs an international forest research network working in 14 countries on four continents.
Losos takes over the helm of OTS from Donald Stone, a Duke University professor emeritus in botany, who was the executive director of OTS from 1976 to 1996 and interim CEO since 2003.
Losos holds a doctorate in biology from Princeton University and a master’s degree in public affairs from the same school.

Study illustrates diversification, speciation in biological "islands"
Jonathan B. Losos, Ph.D., associate professor of biology in Arts and Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, proved this species-area relationship in a study of 143 species of Caribbean Anolis lizards on 147 islands.
Losos, and co-author Dolph Schluter, Ph.D., professor of biology at the University of British Columbia, published these results in the Dec. 14, 2000 issue of Nature.
Losos and Schluter’s results complement the well-known "Equilibrium Theory of Island Biogeography," proposed in 1967 by the late Robert MacArthur of Princeton University and E.O. Wilson of Harvard University.

Losos asked Gibson-Brown if he would be interested in joining a team in a proposal to the Packard Foundation.
There is not much genetic difference between humans and chimpanzees, Losos explained, but biologists agree that the big difference between the two is that somehow there have been changes in genes that affect the developmental process so that the outcome during development is a different organism.
Losos and his University collaborators have a lot of evolutionary data on the lizards to launch this study and now a cadre of outstanding developmental and evolutionary biologists to make significant inroads.

Caribbean lizard study yields key new findings about evolution
Losos and his colleagues examined the DNA of 56 species of anole lizards found in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica and the Greater Antilles.
Losos and his colleagues developed the family tree to test two theories on how the lizards evolved.
In Science, Losos and his colleagues report that the anole evolutionary tree shows the habitat specialists from the different islands are not closely related genetically, despite exact similarities in their physical traits.

Losos measured the length of their hind legs, and, as he and colleagues Ken Warheit and Schoener report in the May 1 issue of Nature, a consistent pattern emerged.
But, Losos suggests, such minute anatomical adjustments may be the first baby steps that an anole population would take on its way to becoming a new species.
Losos is currently seeking the answer with anoles of the same species from Florida, which are being raised at the St. Louis Zoo on perches of different diameter.

Losos de Muñiz’s exciting wins in at the CDI*** Zada WEF Dressage Classic comes hot on the heels of her success at the Florida Dressage Classic, held February 13-16, where she won both the Prix St. Georges (70.75%) and Intermediare I (69.00%) competitions and placed second in the Intermediare Freestyle (71.50%).
Losos de Muñiz then teamed up with her student, George Fernández, to claim the bronze medal at the 2002 FEI Championship of the Americas in Blainville, Canada.

Were this is case, one could argue that it is not adaptation to environment that brings about similar ecotypes amongst the species but rather a fulfillment of the natural evolutionary progression of the Anole leading to its culmination of four specific ecotypes.
Losos and colleagues argue that this is not the case, citing examples of species that are not among the noted ecomorhpic classes.
Losos and colleagues suggest that the lack of importance of historical contingency on this experiment may be related to the setting of the test.

 Stephen Caesar's Articles
Jonathan Losos, professor of biology at Washington University and director of the Tyson Research Center, has studied tree anoles (Caribbean lizards) and witnessed unquestionable microevolution, as anoles' feet and leg size changed when they were introduced to new kinds of tree branches.
Since, according to Losos, "[e]volution most often occurs over timescales humans cannot experience," he assumed that the microevolution he witnessed was "a tiny window" into an eons-long macroevolutionary process (Losos 2001: 67).
Losos stated that phenotypic plasticity "could even result in individuals that are genetically identical.

Following the retirement of Inatana Las Marismas, Losos de Muniz will be concentrating on the development of the newly-acquired Bernstein DVH 696, a nine-year-old chestnut Hannoverian stallion by the Trakehner sire, Banditentraum, who won the Intermediaire I in his first outing with Losos de Muniz.
Losos de Muniz also has two yearling foals from Inatana Las Marismas daughter and granddaughter that she hopes will, one day, continue the mare’s legacy in the international dressage arena.

Lizards Help Explain Survival of the Not-So-Fittest
Losos and his colleagues wanted to settle a debate over whether species can prevent natural selection by changing their own behavior.
They might move into the trees and out of reach of the curly-tails, or they might begin to "select" for larger, harder-to-eat bodies—meaning that smaller anoles would be eaten, with the result that future generations of anoles would be larger than previous generations.
Losos' research was supported in part by a grant from the National Geographic Society's Committee for Research and Exploration.

Losos and his colleagues performed the evaluating the introduction a long-legged species of lizard from Staniel Cay to 14 small, lizard less islands in the Bahamas.
Losos felt that they could use this information to forecast the transition of the long-legged lizards of the heavily wooded Staniel Cay to a short-legged variety due to the islands' limited vegetation.
Losos claimed that this study was a macro-evolutionary event and suggested that, "macro evolution may just be micro evolution writ large." The article noted that evolutionary change is assessed in units called darwins.

Using a DNA-based family tree of the lizards, they estimated the numbers of immigration and speciation events that had taken place on the islands.
Intriguingly, though, Losos and Schluter only found within-island speciation on islands larger than 3,000 square kilometers.
