Anorexia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anorexia (deriving from the Greek όρεξη (orexe) = appetite) is the decreased sensation of appetite.
While the term in non-scientific publications is often used interchangably with one of its subtypes, anorexia nervosa, there are many possible causes for a decreased appetite, some of which may be harmless while others pose significant risk for the person.
Inability to eat in the long term may lead to involuntary weight loss, may contribute to cachexia (wasting) and to malnutrition.

 Loss of Appetite
Apart from age-related loss of appetite, there are many other causes of weight loss in the elderly which may lead to malnutrition: social (poverty, functional impairment, isolation, abuse etc), psychologic (dementia, depression, bereavement, alcoholism) and numerous medical conditions, including medications.
Although several types of drugs have been tested for their ability to improve appetite in the elderly, none has become firmly established, as the side effects are too pronounced.
The risk associated with the loss of appetite in aging is that it may occur along with a social or medical condition, resulting in protein-energy malnutrition.

Sleep loss boosts appetite, may encourage weight gain
Researchers at the University of Chicago have found that partial sleep deprivation alters the circulating levels of the hormones that regulate hunger, causing an increase in appetite and a preference for calorie-dense, high-carbohydrate foods.
Research subjects who slept only four hours a night for two nights had an 18 percent decrease in leptin, a hormone that tells the brain there is no need for more food, and a 28 percent increase in ghrelin, a hormone that triggers hunger.
The study volunteers, all healthy young men, reported a 24 percent increase in appetite, with a surge in desire for sweets, such as candy and cookies, salty foods such as chips and nuts, and starchy foods such as bread and pasta.

 Ghrelin, Appetite & Weight Control
"A powerful mechanism to increase appetite and decrease metabolism when weight loss occurs is likely to have evolved because our species was subjected to periods of famine, and the threat to survival came from starvation, not overnutrition," he said.
Another promising discovery, leptin, an appetite suppressant made by fat cells and thought to have great promise as a treatment for obesity, has turned out to be a disappointment because most overweight people are resistant to its effects.
That finding may help explain why diets fail for the majority of overweight people; the most they can realistically hope to lose is 5 percent to 10 percent of their body weight, and keeping off even that amount usually requires a lifelong struggle.

In experiments with mice, the Johns Hopkins researchers showed that appetite is immediately and directly tied to amounts of a chemical called malonyl-CoA.
Furthermore, chemically reducing appetite by injecting a compound called C75 into the brain brought levels of malonyl-CoA up to those of mice given food, helping to explain C75's effects.
"Fully understanding how appetite is regulated by the brain should reveal ways to control appetite," said Lane, who was studying how fat cells develop when he and colleagues discovered the appetite-suppressing effects of C75 a few years ago.
