Lossiemouth   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Lossiemouth's development has been ascribed to the need of Elgin for a new port after its original port of Spynie had been cut off from the sea by sand and shingle deposited by the River Lossie.
The present harbour was built to accommodate the growing fleet, and a new town, Branderburgh, was laid out on the hilltop to the west by Colonel Brander of Pitgaveny, eventually growing to join the old fishing hamlet of Stotfield.
Alongside the traditional fishing, which is still an important factor in the town's economy, Lossiemouth also owes its prosperity to the tourist industry and to the RAF station just to the south-west.

A fishing port and resort town in the Moray parish of Drainie, situated on the Moray Firth at the mouth of the River Lossie, 6 miles (9½ km) north of Elgin.
It incorporates the communities of Old Lossiemouth, a fishing village which was laid out by the merchants of Elgin in 1764, the fishing village of Stotfield and a new section, Branderburgh, which was laid out on a clifftop to a design by George MacWilliam c.1830 and named after Colonel Brander of Pitgaveny.
The original port, which was moved from Spynie to its present position in 1698 after the mouth of Spynie Loch had become closed with shingle, owed its early growth to its role as Elgin's seaport but later, with the coming of the railway, developed as a marine resort.
