Veteran folksinger John Prine followed up his Grammy winning THE MISSING YEARS with the nearly-as-winning LOST DOGS AND MIXED BLESSINGS.
Keeping Tom Petty and Heartbreakers` Howie Epstein in the producer`s chair, Prine assembled a cast of similarly seasoned pros to lend a hand (fellow Heartbreaker Benmont Tench, Marianne Faithful, and Waddy Wachtel.) Perhaps bolstered by his recent commercial recognition, Prine beefed up the sound considerably with fuller band arrangements.
While the augmented sound provides considerably more texture, the level of intimacy is somewhat diminished as a result.

phorum - Dylan Pool discussion - John Prine's best song (NDC)
Tricia, that would be Lake Marie, off JP's 1995 Lost Dogs & Mixed Blessings, a wonderful song among many on a great album which I consider to be in the same realm as Dylan's Time Out Of Mind - a return to songwriting and storytelling to equal anything which came before.
He sang about a dozen songs, and had to do a dozen more before it was over.

Lost Dogs And Mixed Blessings : Listening to this album and other greats by John Prine, I may be forever puzzeled as to why many consider JP's music as being in a Cult Status.
Another great album from a premier singer-songwriter : John Prine is one of those rare singer/songwriters whose literate work is more popular with fellow artists than with the listening public (Phil Everly, Tom Petty, Bonnie Raitt, and Bruce Springsteen show up to do background vocals on this album).
Side 2 is underrated : The first CD has may of Prine's most well known songs, which makes for a very strong CD.
