The Lost River is geologically the same river as the Cacapon River but flows into an underground channel northeast of Baker along WV 259 at "the Sinks" and reappears near Wardensville as the Cacapon.
North River is a tributary of the Cacapon River, belonging to the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay watersheds.
Opequon Creek is a tributary of the Potomac River.

Lionel Branson, an English Quaker, settled on Lost River in 1765 and is reputed to have cut the first wagon road following the old Indian Trail across Rock Bridge from the Shenandoah to this valley.

This sharp treacherous bend in the river channel borders historic Goat Island, a 3½-mile-long spit of sand and cottonwoods.
In the Annual Report of the Missouri River Commission for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1897, Captain Hiram M. Chittenden published a compilation showing the loss of 295 steamboats on the Missouri River from the beginning of steam navigation to the date of the report.
The river channel has shifted vastly along it's flood plain leaving scores of remains of steamboats that once navigated the river during the glorious days of riverboat travel.

 Seacoast Online: Lost River Gorge waterfall reopens after 20 years
Legend has it that the boulder-strewn gorge, through which Lost River flows from the slopes of Mount Moosilauke, was discovered in 1852 by a pair of brothers, Royal and Lyman Jackman, who accidentally stumbled into what has become known as Shadow Cave.
Some of the caves in the gorge were named more than a century ago using themes from Greek mythology and these underground falls were named in honor of Pluto's wife, Proserpine.
Lost River Gorge is owned by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests and is managed by White Mountains Attractions.
