Located in the heart of Idaho in probably the most sparsely populated region, the Lost River Valley runs 75 miles from Arco through the great wild-west town of Mackay and on to Willow Creek Summit south of Challis.
Lost River Range is an area of fantastic cliffs, rock folds, spires, huge peaks and vast vistas.
The Pioneer's are the headwaters for the Big Lost River, a freestone river that meanders through the valley until it reaches Mackay Reservoir.

At the head of Cedar Canyon is Peak 12,058 and to the left of 12,058 is Leatherman Peak, Idaho's second tallest peak at 12,228 feet.
At the top of Chicken-out, at 11,898 feet, is a knife edge ridge, part of the main crest of the Lost River range which intersects the west-east ridge.

We lost the trail at some point and just bush-whacked our way to 9,200 feet, where Elkhorn Creek splits and followed the left fork heading northeast (on the way back, we found the trail much higher up on the mountain).
After the scree slide is over, there is a cool down climb of a waterfall in the gully, then a neat hike through a basin at Mount Idaho's feet that is sure to impress you.
