Lost, Provisional, Out of Bounds   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Although the penalty for a lost ball is the same now as in the oldest written Rules of 1744, there have been a few changes in the interim.
For a lost ball, the player must play stroke and distance, but if the original ball is found "before the party playing a new one has come to the ground where it was lost, the first continues the one to be played".
Added, although a provisional may not be played for a ball in a water hazard, if the original is found in a water hazard, and the provisional has been played in accordance with the relief procedure for water hazards, then it becomes the ball in play, otherwise it must be abandoned.

Lost ball - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As a result of this, when 'lost ball' is called, Law 20 requires the umpires replace the ball with one which had comparable wear to the previous ball.
When 'lost ball' is called, the batting side keeps any penalty that would have been declared if the delivery was not fair (see no ball and wide) plus 6 runs, or whatever they have in fact run before the call of 'lost ball' was made.
A call of 'lost ball' is unusual in professional cricket, and nowadays only really happens in recreational games where cricket fields may include rabbit warrens, molehills or the like, or where there is a tree in the field of play and no local rule about what happens when it is hit.

Rule of the Week - Rule 27: Ball Lost or Out of Bounds; Provisional Ball | United States Golf Association
If a ball is lost or is out of bounds, the player must play a ball, under penalty of one stroke, as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5).
If he makes a stroke with the provisional ball from the place where the original ball is likely to be or from a point nearer the hole than that place, the original ball is lost and the provisional ball becomes the ball in play under penalty of stroke and distance (Rule 27-1).
Play of a provisional ball does not render the original ball lost until it has been played from the place where the original ball is likely to be or from a point nearer the hole than that place — Rule 27-2b.

RCGA - Golf Canada - Current Issue - Article
For example, if a player`s ball may be lost or out of bounds and the player drops and plays another ball (a substituted ball) without correctly announcing that the substituted ball is a provisional ball, the original ball is deemed lost and the substituted ball becomes the ball in play.
The third action that deems a ball lost is playing a provisional ball from the place where the original ball is likely to be or a point closer to the hole than that place.
As we stated earlier, the procedures for a lost ball and a ball that is out of bounds are the same, therefore the player must proceed under the stroke-and-distance penalty by going back to where he last played his original ball and add a one stroke penalty under the Rule.

The caddie was still arguing out on the fairway; the officials had radio contacted the R and A tent and called O`Meara back and told him he had to play his original ball from the spot where it had been found.
The ball which had been discovered in a deep hole in the vegetation was now to be dropped on a 45 degree slope which resembled a thatched roof and - again I maintain - that five minutes had surely passed since the search had commenced.
0'Meara took a new ball from his caddie, autographed it and gave it to the man. The ruling seemed to be that O'Meara had to drop the original ball within one club length of wherever the ball had disappeared - which was anyone's guess.

Answer: The moment you dropped the new ball, that new ball became the ball in play and your original ball was lost (see definition of lost ball).
Finding your original ball later does not change that, so NO, you are not allowed to continue with your original ball after you have brought a ball into play under Rule 27-1.
BTW, I hope that when you write "I decided to drop a ball and continue on" you mean that you dropped a ball at the spot from where you played your last stroke, which is your only available option if your ball is lost outside a water hazard.

Otherwise the ball must be considered lost outside the hazard…Observing a splash in a water hazard would not necessarily provide reasonable evidence, as splashing balls sometimes skip out of hazards.

 Halfbakery: Never-Lost Golf Ball
The Never-Lost ball has a small radio receiver in it, along the lines of an RFID tag, as well as a watch battery, four equally-distanced LED lights (set within the dimples) and a small speaker.
The receiver in the ball acknowledges the signal from the Finder, and your lost ball reacts to the signal by both blinking and whistling - so blind and deaf golfers are equally able to find their missing balls.
The timer will force the lost ball to turn itself off 15 minutes after being struck by a club, meaning that only one ball at a time within a certain range of the Finder (say, 100 feet) will ever blink on.
