I must confess when I first saw the theatrical film "Lost in Space," I was less than thrilled.
Series creator Irwin Allen intended "Lost in Space" to be a family drama, but with a little tinkering and the addition of co-star Jonathan Harris as the malevolent Dr. Smith, the series became high camp.
Now the Jupiter 2 is "Lost in Space." Aside from Goldsman's dumb dialogue, most of "Lost in Space" is pretty exciting stuff.

Lost in Space is infected with a meandering storyline and lifeless protagonists.
Lost in Space features a few action sequences that generate adrenaline jolts, but this is not an edge-of-the-seat motion picture.

Baby-boomers of the era might hold fond memories of the series, but in reality Allen's "Lost in Space" changed from an adventurous tale of a family lost in space to a weekly showcase for some drug-induced fantasy that didn't just push the envelope, it shredded it.
Outer-space outlaw bikers and vegetable creatures became part of the "Lost in Space" landscape as the series tried to be everything to everyone.
"Lost in Space," the movie, brings along a lot of baggage with it, and as a baggage handler, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman does the film a major disservice.

Lost in Space is the first album Mann has made solely under her own guidance and for her own label.
And as with all her work, the craftsmanship is impeccable-- three- or four-minute pop songs with arching, lilting melodies, and arrangements where every detail is in place, from the succinct but grinding guitar solos, to the subtle keyboards and embellishments that back her up.
Lost in Space leaves you feeling that she's already covered this terrain-- even played variations of some of these songs.

Filmtracks: Lost in Space (Bruce Broughton)
Lost in Space: (Bruce Broughton) Although the 1998 large-scale studio adaptation of Irwin Allen's famous Lost in Space tale performed considerably well at the time of its release, the film failed to become enough of a success to sustain a franchise based on the Robinson family.
Other issues exists with how the score was dubbed into the film, with a constant battle between the music, sound effects, and dialogue often leaving the dialogue in a more difficult, shadowy situation.
Luckily, for the film score collectors, Broughton's long-time partnership with the Intrada Records label led to a score-only release early the next year, pushing the amount of score material preset up beyond an hour.

Lost In Space movie review by Jim Eadon
The clever stunt this film pulled was to drown us in clever SFX for well over an hour and then STOP them to concentrate on the Robinson family.

Lost in Space is another suspenseless, sterile SFX movie then.

Broughton is one of those film composers that know how to take advantage of an orchestra, without resorting to synthesized effects.
Later on in the film, when the Jupiter II comes across the remains of the rescue ship (it's a rather interesting plot involving time travel), Broughton presents us with some very sad and ominous music - we know something bad is going to happen, but we just don't know what.
Lost in Space is one of those very thematic scores that seems to have written itself after the initial themes were worked out.

Lost in the gee-whiz coverage, however, was a tiny detail: Almost from the get-go, Chiat's virtual office was a joke in the advertising world, "the laughingstock of the industry," recalls Steve Rabosky, a former agency creative director.
Not that anyone involved was chuckling much at the time: If Chiat's "road warriors" had had anything more substantial than flip-top phones in their hands, there would have been blood on the virtual floor.
From its founding in 1968, it had continually defied the conventions of the trade, relying equally on irreverence and sophisticated film technique.

Lost in Space - Music from the Movies
Unquestionably, Broughton's wide symphonic palette is perfect for universal spaces, and Lost In Space is a superb epic score in the best of Star Wars traditions.
This expanded score release presents nearly all of the 70-plus minutes of music Broughton composed for the film, as opposed to the disappointing soundtrack album from TVT Records, a CD which combined useless songs with only 30 minutes of score.
Lost In Space is a throughly enjoyable listening experience and if you're a fan of stupendously orchestrated symphonic film music, this one is going to make your heart beat faster than in a long time.

The J2 is lost, wanders for an uncertain period of time, and ultimately lands on a reasonably habitable planet, perhaps for supplies, perhaps to build a future for the Robinson family.

Based off the old 60's television series, Lost in Space certainly had the opportunity to be a suspenseful and imaginative sci-fi adventure, but it ends up feeling like little more than an overlong pilot episode for a failed television series.
The cast is thoroughly unconvincing (even William Hurt and Gary Oldman), a good portion of the special effects are second-rate, and the subplot involving time rips and time "bubbles" feels tacked-on and pointless.
This is a silly adventure film that lacks tension and fun, or even competent film-making and writing.

Lost in Space is certainly never boring, and visually it's an occasionally awesome demonstration of special effects technology.
But in its attempt to be all things to all demographics, the movie's more of a marketing ploy than a satisfying adventure, thankfully dispensing with the TV show's cheesy camp but otherwise squandering a promising cast in favour of eye-candy and ephemeral storytelling.
This film is not going to satisfy the "it's not totally believable" Sci-Fi fan, but for the rest of us, it's a blast.
