  Lost Wax Casting
The origins of the lost wax process are shrouded in antiquity, but it has been used for thousands of years to produce objects in metal which could not be produced any other way, due to the complexity of their form.
While wax patterns were originally modelled by hand, and this can still be done, it is now possible to cast wax into molds as well, so that multiple copies may be made even though the wax pattern is lost in the process.
Waxes can be cast either solid or hollow, as the wax will coat the inside of a mold after it is filled and poured out.

Lost Wax Method, Bronze Casting, Casting Bronze Statues India, Cire Perdue
The lost wax method technique is divided into five separate stages, namely 1) creation of the wax model 2) forming the earthen mold 3) melting the wax from the mold “the lost wax method” 4) casting of the mold and 5) finishing and filing of the bronze statue.
The wax model of the base is made separate from the wax model of the figure.
To prevent the wax model from melting and losing its form, the wax model is kept in water to insulate it against the heat.

LOST WAX CASTING OF GOLD, SILVER BRONZE AND BRASS JEWELLERY PROCESS
I was born in London on the 28th August 1937, the son of a Hatton Garden jeweller with his own jewellery workshop at No.31 and at the tender age of 14 years, in 1952, I decided to leave art school and join the family business.
He decided, as well as marrying their sister, to bring her and Lost Wax Casting or (Cire Perdue) back with him to England.
This was one of the first jewellery products produced in the U.K. using the "Lost Wax Casting" process and I am pleased to say that here I am 52 years later still producing the Coronation Coach Charm.

Lost wax casting has been around for thousands of years, yet few people understand how the process actually works.
Although mechanization has facilitated the lost wax process of bronze casting, the procedure is basically the same as that used by the Chinese when they first developed the process in the 2nd millennium BC.
Once the wax has cooled, the mold is peeled away, yielding a wax image (the wax positive") duplicating the original sculpture.

Utility Wax or Sticky Wax is used to fasten the converging sprues to the sprue base.
This process eliminates the wax from your investment flask, forming a cavity to be filled with molten metal during casting.
Just before you complete wax elimination, place the proper size flask adapter into the vacuum chamber of the casting unit to securely hold the flask to be cast.

The wax assembly is now dipped multiple times in a ceramic slurry, depending on the shell thickness desired.
After the shell is created to the specifications desired, the wax must be removed; this is normally achieved using an autoclave.
Small art pieces such as jewelry are often cast by this method using the lost wax process, as the forces enable the rather viscous liquid metals to flow through very small passages and into fine details such as leaves and petals.

 Classical Greek Sculpture: Methods: Bronze
At this point, with the wax gone (a step where the clay mold and clay model hardened from the firing) and with the supporting function of the nails, there would exist a half inch thick air space, between the mold and model.
The wax is then removed from the mold pieces and the fine details of the final sculpture are easily carved into the soft clay interior of the mold parts.
The name for these methods of casting bronze sculpture is cire perdue, translated quite fittingly to "lost wax" as wax is drained from the mold and "lost" in that sense.

Some waxes may be carved while others may be shaped by hand, some cut from flat sheets, others twisted, melted, heated, engraved, textured, or fashioned by any number of methods to define shapes and details in the wax.
The term "sprue" generally refers to a wax rod or series of these rods that secure the wax model to a specifically configured rubber or plastic base that is called a sprue base.
Once the waxes have been securely attached to the sprue base using sprue rods, a stainless steel flask is carefully inserted inside the outer lip of the sprue base, so as to surround the waxes while still leaving, minimally, a quater inch space between the wax and the inside of the flask.

Londonderry Brasses, Ltd. - Fine Brass Hardware - Lost Wax Casting
Lost wax casting is the process by which a solid object made in wax is transformed into metal: bronze (an alloy of copper, tin and other trace metals) or brass (an alloy of copper, zinc and other trace metals).
A sprue is a ribbon-like wax attachment to the brass, which will serve as a channel for the liquid wax and later as a channel for the molten brass.
The waxes with their attached sprues are then attached to a thicker column of wax, which will finally form the channel through which the liquid metal can flow.
