Lot Myrick Morrill (May 13, 1813 – January 10, 1883) was an American statesman who served as Governor of Maine, and in the United States Senate and as Secretary of the Treasury.
He was born in Belgrade, Maine to Peaslee and Nancy (Macomber) Morrill, and studied law at Waterville College, now Colby College.
A member of the Republican party, he served in the Maine State Senate from 1854 until 1856, and was elected Governor of Maine in 1858.

Lot Myrick Morrill was born in 1813 in Belgrade, Maine.
Morrill left the Democratic party in 1856 because of the party’s stance on slavery, so it was as a Republican that he was elected to the state senate, where he was its president.
Though Morrill had declined an earlier offer from Grant to become secretary of war, he accepted the treasury portfolio and remained in that position until the end of the Grant administration in 1877.

Lot M. Morrill (1812-1883) earned the reputation of an accomplished financier in the Senate (1861-1876) as the first chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations.
Though he was not in office long enough to effect major legislation, Morrill suggested in his Annual Report of 1876 that the Secretary of the Treasury begin accumulating gold in anticipation of the eventual adoption of a gold backed currency in 1879.

Morrill guided CSU to two of its six all-time 20-win seasons and won at least 17 games five times in his seven years.

Morrill Hall is such a place, filled with stories and filled with memories.
Naming the building after Sen. Morrill was significant since Iowa was the first state in the nation to accept the terms of the Morrill Act (1862) and Iowa State was the first institution to be designated a land-grant institution (1864) -- even though all that was here at the time was the Model Farm.
Morrill Hall was built at cost of $28,739 and dedicated on June 16, 1891.

In addition, the voters approved selling "lots in the Graveyard to persons living out of Town and State" and voted the "the Selectmen reduce the valuation of Real Estate in the town on an average".
(The sale of Graveyard lots, which was approved at the 1876 Meeting, was reversed in the mid-1900's.) The town clerk and constable at this meeting was a James C. Mosher.
Lot was born in 1803, and Anson in 1811, both in Belgrade.

A lot of the problems in the Middle East have arisen because of other nations sticking their nose where it does not belong, trying to "fix" things.
Perhaps thinking they can "fix" things in the first place is their biggest problem.
