 Winter storms Lothar and Martin
Lothar and Martin again confirmed that insured storm losses in USD billions are not infrequent.
Although Lothar – with USD 5.0 bn in France and USD O.45 bn in Switzerland – exceeded the peak losses caused by the 1990 storm series many times over, the loss extent throughout Europe came as no surprise.
Particularly in France, but also in southern Germany and Switzerland, losses triggered by Lothar and Martin were paralleled only by the storms of 1990.

 www.iop.org News - Storming launch for Journal of Turbulence
Gusts of up to 170 km/hr were recorded as the storm, named Lothar, reaped havoc across much of Northern France, Southern Germany and Switzerland on 26 December 1999 after forming on the extended trailing cold front of a North Atlantic depression that crossed the UK on Christmas Eve.
They interpreted this as Lothar’s explosive development and deepening – similar to that observed in the great storm of October 1987 in the UK – that led to so much damage and destruction.
Eddies and turbulence may be to blame for the explosive formation of a storm causing over eight billion dollars in damage in Europe last Christmas, according to research by French physicists published this month in the new Institute of Physics publication, Journal of Turbulence.

 Storm Catastrope 25 - 28 December 1999 - Lothar and Lothar successor
From 18.00 UTC on 25 December a Wave feature develops in the frontal cloud band in the area of the cloud head belonging to "Lothar successor"; consequently, the bright cloud to the rear of the frontal cloud band is shifted northward and thus partly hides the lower cloud bulge.
During the same period the WV image shows a pronounced Dark Stripe to the rear of the cloud structure of "Lothar successor"; this WV stripe is much more pronounced than the mere grey shade gradient to the rear of the cloud head belonging to Lothar;
"Lothar successor" can be seen from the very beginning in IR images as a substructure in the western part of the low cloud head belonging to Lothar and later as separate (cut off) cold air feature (25 December/06.00 - 15.00 UTC)

 Storms: Extratropical Storms
Storm events like "Wiebke" or "Vivian" in 1990 or "Lothar" which claimed 122 lives in Western Europe in December 1999 are recently often interpreted in the media as first indications of a "climate disaster".
However, reliable scientific results are currently not available to support an increase of storms in extratropical regions.
Regarding storm activity, the lack of confident long-term observations is of essential importance.
