Lothar, with KG 4, returned to the Western Front, took part in the Verdun campaign, and later in the Battle of the Somme.
Lothar was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class by Kogenluft (Commanding General of Air Forces), von Hoeppner in December 1916.
Lothar was injured in a dogfight with a B.E.2a on May 13.

Von Richthofen claimed to have shot down an aircraft on October 25th but this was countered by several counter claims from fellow officers for the same kill.
Von Richthofen claimed he was responsible for shooting down a two-seat BE2 (in fact a single seater BE12) from No.21 Squadron RFC bearing the serial number 6629 and flown by a Lt. Fisher.
Richthofen was forced to to land due to structural failure of this aircraft after the fight.

In a running battle fought in deteriorating visibility, the aircraft became scattered until Lothar was engaged in a one-on-one dogfight with Ball which ended with both aircraft crashing behind German lines.
Ball was killed, but Lothar survived and was credited with the victory, though it was likely Ball had become disoriented and lost control of his aircraft.
Lothar scored his final kill on 12 August 1918, flying a Fokker D.VII, just before he was again wounded.

While Manfred von Richthofen was a disciplined fighter, his brother Lothar was something of a wild man in the air, stunting about, firing at virtually anything.
Lothar was a hot head in combat, he would often charge alone into the middle of an Allied formation.
Although Lothar's exploits certainly lent power to the Richthofen name, he was never as famous or respected as his brother.
