Lenya was immortalized in the role of Jenny, which became her breakthrough -- from the premiere of the work, on the final day in August of 1928, until the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany in 1933, she was the star of the moment.
Lenya and Weill weren't the most prominent German expatriates living in the United States during this period -- that honor probably belonged to Marlene Dietrich, or perhaps to Conrad Veidt, each of whose every action as adopted Americans constituted a slap in the face to the Hitler government.
Lenya did contribute some recordings to American war effort, and to the Voice of America, but she was primarily a creature of the stage for the next decade, and not even that for a time, following an unhappy experience in Weill's The Firebrand of Florence (1945), which convinced her to give up the theater temporarily.

Chief among them was his wife, Lotte Lenya, the foremost interpreter of his music, who single-handedly passed her style down to singers who have championed Weill more recently, notably Ute Lemper.
Recorded in the late 1950s, Lenya's voice is actually less gruff and declamatory, more of an actual 'singing voice' in these American songs than in Weill's German songs.
One thing Lenya could never do was swing - a rehearsal excerpt here features Louis Armstrong trying to teach her how - but the originality and authenticity of her style more than make up for that.
