The 340R is the sports car for people who live to drive and want the whole experience as raw and as pure as it comes.
We wanted a car that would embody the Lotus characteristics of innovation, light weight, elegance and fun to drive — the 340R is all of these.' What has made the 340R's striking looks and minimalist bodywork possible, is its light and exceptionally stiff chassis.
The 340R has a dynamic, feline stance on the road or track, in keeping with the Lotus philosophy of combining elegance of style and design with basic scientific principles, and it shows, in dramatic fashion, the inherent flexibility of the Elise chassis.

Lotus Elise: Auto Car May 1999 about 340R
Seventy keen 340R buyers have already parted with deposits of L3500 each - 10 per cent of the pan-European price - to reserve early cars, and Lotus dealers are also believed to have dozens more customers who have paid L1000 just to ensure they're on the list.
The 340R will be a rare Lotus: only 340 will ever be built, in a three-month run beginning in November, with the first cars reaching owners before Christmas.
There have been adjustments to the body side heights (Lotus has discovered that a stray truck design regulation requires it to provide the car with a body-side step) and to the length and height of the engine cover, for aerodynamic purposes.

 Lotus: The next step
Lotus is drawing up plans for a radical, super-light, super-fast, Elise based sports car to go on display at this year's NEC motor show.
It was a bad day when the Esprits started being tinselled up in white leather for the US market a few years ago, and the good times only rolled again when the Sport 300 brought back race bucket seats and body colour surfaces in the cockpit.
As the Elise 340R saga proceeds, we'll all be sharpening our thoughts about the car's shape, and explaining in later episodes how on-paper concepts proceed to scale drawings and then to a full size model.

Lotus Exige- There has always been a strong link between Lotus racecars and road cars, but seldom has that relationship been so direct as with the launch of the new Exige.
That's hardly surprising, as the Exige is a road-going replica of the Sport Elise racer, albeit with a few concessions to type approval regulations and the rigours of everyday road use.

Naked Desire — Lotus has stripped away everything that doesn't add to the thrill of driving to build possibly the wildest road car ever, the outrageous 340R — Prepare to be seduced.
Having experienced both the 135 and 190 Elises, it's clear the 340R will be incredibly agile, with massive bite at the front end but without the sometimes wayward, light-feeling rear end of the standard Elise.
Although no figures have been taken, Lotus estimates the standard road-going 340R will be good for 0-60mph in 4.3secs, 100mph in 10.9 and run on until it hits an aerodynamic brick wall at 130mph.

According to Lotus, it’s because there will only ever be 340 cars build, all of which are sold, which you should think would be every good argument for upping the production run to 500.

I've been trying to resist delving into the oily bits of our long-term Lotus but after the article we ran in issue 057 about the VHPD K-series being hopelessly out of balance and never actually producing the quoted figures, it seemed a good idea to check out the health of our engine.
Torque is nowhere near where it should be either at 134.8lb ft at 6576rpm (Lotus quotes 146lb ft at 5000rpm).
What's promised after all the changes have been carried out is an engine producing around 195bhp, a smooth idle, no popping and farting on part throttle and a revised rev limit up around the 8200rpm mark.

The road is perfect for a 340R, a quick blast of acceleration down the straights, leave the braking as late as you dare as the armco approaches at great speed, trying to not look over the precipice that, at least your mind tells you, is just the other side of that galvanized steel.
Again the 340R is breath taking, taking each straight with a series of up shifts through the rev range, at each gear the car is begging for the next cog, which gets swiftly dispatched in the same way at the last.

Although mechanically untouched, the 340R's bodywork was cracked and, as it's an all-in-one body, it meant the whole lot had to be replaced at a cost of £4082.
The roads are deserted and that crazy engine is making light work of powering the featherweight 340R, each gear devoured in an instant thanks to the ultra-close-ratio 'box.

So the interior adornments are restricted to a Lotus quick shifter and gear knob, a MOMO race-spec quick-release steering wheel, and a Lotus 340R anodised fire extinguisher.
