Lotus Cortina's in the Marathon   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Lotus was active and competitive in Formula One racing from 1958 to 1994.
Again, a Lotus version was produced (this time done in-house at Ford) but the most admired was the 1600E that came out in late 1967.
One of the cars was the Lotus Cortina, crewed by Duncan Bray, a London engineer; Peter Sudgen, an advertising executive; and Simon Sladen, an interior decorator.

 CORTINA IN MOTORSPORT
Roger Clark’s privately-prepared Cortina GT won the Scottish rally in 1964 and 1965 and the 1965 Gulf-London event, the Elford/Seigle-Morris Lotus-Cortina lifted the Handicap Category of the 1964 Tour de France and Clark’s Lotus-Cortina won the Welsh rally of 1965.
Cortinas were also prominent in the new TV Rallycross events.
In the 1970s later-model Cortinas were little used in motor sport, where the regulations favoured specialised, limited-production models, yet just for fun (and charity) Ford supported  one-model races in Britain and in Europe for Mk III Cortinas, where racing drivers like John Surtees, Jody Scheckter and Frank Gardner kept the crowds entertained.

 Lotus Chassis Numbers
The safest answer is first to check with the Lotus Cortina Register to find out if the car is known to the club, and second to take an expert with you when you look at the car.
Of the 2867 Lotus Cortinas MK1s built until the end of 1966 of both left hand drive and right hand drive, roughly 400 were left hand drive.
The code BA91 denoted that it was a Lotus Cortina but because the Mk2 was built by Ford, and not Lotus, the chassis numbers followed the mass produced Mk 2 Cortinas.

Lotus Corina - Sport Compact Car Web   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Lotus' top factory driver in those days, the quiet but brilliant Jim Clark from Scotland (a two-time world champion), stepped out of his F1 car long enough to pick up the British Saloon Car Championship in a Lotus Cortina.
Ford redesigned the Cortina's body and took the opportunity to announce that, while there would still be a Lotus version, this Mark II model would come off the regular Ford production line.
Though the Lotus engine's horsepower was bumped a bit to 109, it wouldn't be enough to compensate for the new car's lack of charm.

The Cortina bodyshells were sent to the Lotus Works at Chesnut where they were outfitted with Lotus engines and light alloy doors together with bonnet and bootlid panels also in light alloy.
Fitted with the Corsair 200E gearbox as standard the Lotus had a split propshaft instead of the single piece fitted to all other versions of the Mk II Cortina but the dashboards and seats were the same as on the GT model.
Apart from the charismatic Lotus Cortina which was discontinued in July 1970, the Mk II range was probably the best remembered for one particular model - the 1600E.

The Lotus 25 was the first monocoque chassis in F1, the 49 was the first car of note to use the engine as a stressed member and the 72 broke new ground in aerodynamics.
In the mid-1970s, however, Lotus engineers began to investigate aerodynamic ground-effect and the Lotus 79 of 1978 was extraordinarily successful with Mario Andretti winning the World Championship.
Former Team Lotus employees Peter Collins and Peter Wright organized a deal to take over the team from the Chapman Family and in December the new Team Lotus was launched with Mika Hakkinen and Julian Bailey being signed for the 1991 season.

The Kent engines used in the Cortina, being lightweight, reliable and inexpensive, were popular with several low-volume sports car manufacturers, including Morgan who used them in the 1962-81 4/4 (and continue to use Ford engines in most of their current models).

The Lotus Cortina was commissioned by Ford to give it’s range of cars a lift out of the ordinary.
Taking the standard Ford engine of 1200cc, Lotus bored it out to 1558cc and designed a new head for it with twin camshafts, thus creating what was known as the Lotus Twin Cam.
Suspension was of course improved in the standard Lotus Cortina but the rear arrangement tended to flex under load and cause leaks in the differential.

But : the one and only rear view picture from an Alan Mann Cortina that I have (in a european race, I have to admit), shows a rear end in the same shade of gray (it's a fl and white picture) as the boot and bottom part.
I left the front seats as they were, but had to seriously increase the heighth of the rear seat back (with plasticard and putty and a lot of sanding and scraping), because it was not high enough for the Cortina body.

The Lotus/Ford Cortina became available to the public in 1963 because in order to compete in group-2 racing, 1000 cars had to be produced for use on the street.
When the diminutive Lotus/Ford Cortina Mk I reached our shores in 1965, it was as unconventional as its four-wheel independent suspension; weighing in at just under 1900 pounds and sporting a dual overhead cam inline-four built by Lotus.
Regardless, the nimble Lotus Cortina began to dominate on the track, making up for what it lacked in horsepower with handling competence and late braking ability.

Walter Hayes, then Ford's Public Affairs Director, conceived the car and took it to Lotus supremo Colin Chapman as he knew Lotus were looking to develop a twin-cam engine of 1498cc.
Chapman accepted, and the Lotus 28 (or "Cortina developed by Ford") was born.
Whilst the car had a reputation for good performance, it also quickly became better known for it's reliability problems (particularly with the suspension) and the car was superceded by the MKII Cortina in 1967 after selling less than 3000 of the original model.
