Lotus Overview   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
Founded in Britain, Lotus is very much a specialty outfit, with output limited to high-performance racecars and sports cars known for their sleek and lightweight designs.
Lotus cars of the 1970s were bigger, costlier and more expensive than their predecessors, and the brand had muscled its way into a segment populated by the likes of Ferrari and Porsche.
Lotus cars were now premium-priced exotics; unfortunately for the brand, this segment saw a dramatic fall-off in demand in the wake of that era's fuel crisis, a fact that caused the automaker to suffer significant losses.

The Lotus 25 was the first monocoque chassis in F1, the 49 was the first car of note to use the engine as a stressed member and the 72 broke new ground in aerodynamics.
In the mid-1970s, however, Lotus engineers began to investigate aerodynamic ground-effect and the Lotus 79 of 1978 was extraordinarily successful with Mario Andretti winning the World Championship.
Former Team Lotus employees Peter Collins and Peter Wright organized a deal to take over the team from the Chapman Family and in December the new Team Lotus was launched with Mika Hakkinen and Julian Bailey being signed for the 1991 season.

CanadianDriver: Motoring Memories - Lotus Elite, 1958-1963
One of the dictates of fire pump use was that it be capable of going from start-up to 5,000 rpm immediately, which meant that it had to have high volume oil flow and be fairly loosely-fitted internally.
The first prototype Elite was shown at the Earls Court Motor Show in the fall of 1957, but the second wasn't delivered until May of 1958.
Colin Chapman's Lotus company went on to produce many more road and racing models, but that little Elite was the one that really launched it into production automobiles.

Lotus Elite British Classic Cars Model Cars Collectible Models Classic Muscle Cars
The first Elite or Lotus Type 14 was an ultra-light two-seater coupé;, produced from 1957 to 1962.
The Elite's most distinctive feature was its highly innovative fiberglass monocoque construction, in which a stressed-skin unibody replaced the previously separate chassis and body components.
Unlike the contemporaneous Chevrolet Corvette, which only used fiberglass for exterior bodywork, the Elite was the first to use this glass-reinforced plastic material for the entire load-bearing structure of the car, though the front of the monocoque incorporated a steel subframe supporting the engine and front suspension.

If the Lotus Elite aftermarket oxygen sensor is working excellently, then you need not worry about this aspect.
If the Lotus Elite exhaust gas oxygen sensor fails, and does not transmit the data, the ECU could allow too much fuel to be released by the fuel injectors, causing the engine to run rich.

1957-1963 Lotus Elite - Latest News, Pictures, and Features - Automobile Magazine
Peter Kirwan-Taylor was an accountant in the City of London when he styled the Lotus Elite, a car for which he also arranged financing.
The Elite’s fiberglass unibody was revolutionary and provided for an absurdly low curb weight of just a bit more than 1000 pounds.
Although it was fast and light, the Elite’s fragility led Lotus to build the Elan roadster that followed on a more conventional steel-backbone chassis.
