The Lotus Esprit has been one of the most successful and longest running supercars, produced from 1976 until 2004, and was developed and improved over time.
The Lotus Esprit (or Kiwi as it was initially known) was developed over 3 years and launched in September 1975, to replace the long running Lotus Europa (although Owner's had to wait till 1976 to collect their cars).
The Lotus Esprit was developed and improved with the introduction of the S2 from 1978 to 1980.

The Lotus 3.5 liter twin turbocharged V8 engine, which had four overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, produced 350 hp at 6,500 rpm with racing versions currently producing over 550 bhp with very few changes from the standard road engine.
With the Lotus Esprit now out of production the last of the breed look set to become future classics, especially since the combination of a substantial frame and glass fiber bodywork will suffer less from corrosion than conventional steel cars.

When in submarine mode, the Esprit is powered and steered by a 4 propeller and twin rudder assembly on the rear of the car, and depth control is achieved by 4 fins in place of the wheels which have been retracted up into sealed compartments.
At least one Lotus Esprit bodyshell was converted by the producers of the film into a mini-submarine.
Apparently it was difficult to control underwater as it's road car shape (which in it's intended environment would produce downforce to keep the car on the road) caused it to adopt a nose down position with ease, which resulted in the nose grazing the bottom of the sea floor quite often.

Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge, Lotus Turbo Challenge 2, and Lotus III: The Ultimate Challenge were pseudo-3D racing games developed by Magnetic Fields and published by Gremlin Graphics in the early 1990s.
Lotus 1 features racing against other cars, with a field of drivers whose names are based on real life racers of the time (Ayrton Sendup, Nijel Mainsail and Alain Phosphate for example), while Lotus 2 features racing against the clock.
Lotus III is not so highly regarded, due to its slower running speed (although this time the Genesis port is faster) and lack of new features.

Production of the next-generation Lotus Esprit is set to move overseas, possibly to Malaysia, in a cost-cutting move aimed at improving profit at the British sports car maker.

The esprit is really not very difficult to work on and modifying it is fairly easy as well.
I am not sure how much horsepower my 1997 Lotus esprit have, but it should be in the range of 550+ HP without propane or NOS injection.

Gremlin seem to be setting themselves up as some sort of driving game specialists at the moment - both Lotus and Supercars (which is also a driving game, believe it or not) arrived just in time for this issue, and we've got a Toyota Rally game to come too.
