 Lotus Sport Exige - RSportsCars.com
Lotus Sport, the performance division of Lotus Cars Ltd., has developed the new Lotus Sport Exige, a direct motorsport derivative of the successful Lotus Exige.
The Lotus designed and engineered racecar was part manufactured by RTN, the team responsible for the Le Mans winning Bentley, using the latest motorsport techniques and procedures to produce a lightweight yet strong carbon-fibre bodywork structure around the standard road-going Lotus Exige Aluminium extruded and bonded chassis.
The moulds were taken directly from the Sport Exige styling “clay” and the resulting carbon fibre panels are race-ready without having to rely on the costly tooling process used in current carbon fibre technology.

MPH Magazine - Lotus Exige   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
For the sake of clarity, the Exige is just like a hardtop Elise with the optional sport package (which includes larger, lighter wheels and stiffer dampers) and a brace of aerodynamic doo-dads.
Lotus is the only major carmaker left in the world that is wholly, fanatically devoted to delivering performance through the reduction of mass.
That's not to say the Exige isn't great on regular roads, but unless you think your M3 is too soft or you want to piss off your neighbor who just got his Cayman S, you're better off with an Elise.

There is a corner at the infamous Nürburgring that sets the Lotus Exige apart from just about every other car on the road, the Lotus Elise included.
And now, at last, the Lotus Exige is coming to the U.S. to join its soft-top sister, the Elise, launched in July last year.
Though the driving position is inherently good — and by the time Exiges find their way Stateside in January, the awkward pedal box which makes heel-and-toe downchanges almost impossible will have been fixed — this is not the kind of car that's going to attract cruisers.

Lotus Exige S - Rideroom News
Being a Lotus, straight-line performance is not the most important factor, but every day driving on normal roads, or around a circuit is. There are very few cars on sale today that can match the speed, agility and safety of the Exige S in both day to day and track or circuit driving.
The Lotus Exige S is built around the revolutionary and award winning extruded and bonded aluminium tub, with a light weight steel rear subframe, as used in the Exige.
The body of the Lotus Exige S remains unchanged from the Exige, as it is already a winning formula that is both effective and stunning to look at.

 Lotus Exige
That's hardly surprising, as the Exige is a road-going replica of the Sport Elise racer, albeit with a few concessions to type approval regulations and the rigours of everyday road use.
Inside the Exige has two seats, rather than the single centrally located item in the Sport Elise racer; the central driving position was considered, but Lotus engineers decided that if you own a car as thrilling as the Exige, you'll want to share the experience with friends and family.
Slowing the Exige down shouldn't be a problem either with the top class AP Racing front brake calipers and 282mm diameter cross-drilled and ventilated discs all round.

Lotus today announced the 2007 Lotus Exige S, the latest addition to its family of lightweight sports cars.
Lotus says it’s the “quickest Lotus production car - so far.” Inspite of this phenomenal performance the fuel economy is impressive with an official combined figure of 9.1 litres / 100 km (31.0 mpg) - extra urban is an impressive 7.2 litres / 100 km (39.2 mpg).
Using a development of the supercharger and intercooler package developed first for the already legendary Lotus Sport Exige 240R, the Exige S has peak power of 218 hp at 7800 rpm, 215 Nm (158.6 lb ft) of torque at 5500 rpm (but 80% is produced at just over 2000 rpm).
