Lotus Seven - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Lotus Seven is a small, simple, lightweight two-seater open-top sports car from Lotus, which has been called "a motorcycle on four wheels".
In 1970, Lotus radically changed the shape of the car to create the Series 4 (S4), which was not widely accepted.
In the original Seven, the front lower A arm (or wishbone) suspension configuration is fairly traditional, but for the purpose of reducing cost - the upper suspension integrated an anti-roll (anti-sway) bar into a horizontal suspension arm.

Lotus produced the Seven from 1957 through to 1973, when the rights to produce the Seven were passed from Lotus to Caterham.
The Seven looks almost the same as it always did; at a quick glance you could be forgiven for thinking that nothing had changed, however, today's Seven probably shares only its overall looks with the original Seven and nothing more.
The Seven only needs a flick of the finger or a twitch of the toe to drive the car, as you are thinking round corners, thinking in straight lines ahead.

Lotus 7 History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The Lotus 7 was originally conceived in the middle 1950s as an inexpensive sports car to be used in British sports car club racing.
Lotus soon began producing a more powerful Super 7 with a 75 hp 1098cc engine and a 4 speed transmission which accelerated the car to 60 mph in about 9 seconds.
In 1966 Lotus moved to a new factory and decided that it was time to retire the 7, but Graham Nearn of Caterham Cars effectively saved the Lotus 7 from oblivion by ordering a substantial quantity of cars, just when new factory car orders had dwindled.

The so-called "long cockpit design, preserved the internals and external dimenions of the original Lotus, except it moved the rear bulkhead back by a couple inches to create more legroom and allowed use of adjustable seats, as not everyone was or is identical to Colin Chapman with a 5'8" stature.
Characteristic for a Seven is the razor sharp handling and the open wheel racer seating position.

The first Seven was built in 1957 by Lotus, the brainchild of Colin Chapman, who was convinced of the advantages of small lightweight racing cars, giving huge power to weight benefits.
He actually referred to the Seven as something he had dreamed of designing since he was a schoolboy - a 'four wheeled motorbike'.
The first sevens were priced at £587 and were powered by a 40bhp Ford engine coupled to a single dry plate clutch and a three speed Ford gearbox.

The Lotus Elise has become a firm favourite at the shows and is attracting the Caterham Seven owner, as this model is more practical, but retaining the sheer exhilarating fun of a car designed for sheer driving pleasure.

A manufacturer of racing boots, Lewis was a well-known Lotus racer, and by 1956 he was in the market for a small, light car suitable for driving in hillclimbs, a popular British diversion at the time.
