BASIC programming language   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Programming languages of the era tended to be designed, like the machines on which they ran, for specific purposes such as scientific formula processing.
The original BASIC language was invented in 1964 by John Kemeny (1926–93) and Thomas Kurtz (1928–) at Dartmouth College and implemented by a team of Dartmouth students under their direction.
This applies as well to other "old" computer languages like COBOL and FORTRAN, although the BASIC movement is by far the largest; this may be explained by the large number of IT professionals who cut their teeth on BASIC programming during the home computer era in the 1980s.

Because it is intended for use as an application extension language, Lua does not have the notion of a 'main' program or initial entry point; instead, all code is assumed to be invoked from the host application.

When learning a new language it can be quite daunting, if you couple that with Domino classes, Java agents, applets and applications it can all get a bit much for the beginner.
Recently I read a document on notes.net called "Introduction to Java for LotusScript programmers" which is in fact a pdf file of slides used in a presentation at Lotus Dev Con 2001.
Use Java and you receive a pre built chunk of code, many of you may have tried this already and frowned at the code you are given, needless to say it is understanding this chuck of code that is the key to understanding the fundamentals of Java Agents.

This course is not a beginning programming class or a mere overview presentation of the LotusScript implementation in Domino and the Notes Client.
The course takes a task-oriented approach, during which you will create programs that are extremely portable across applications and easy to move from buttons to fields to agents.

LotusScript takes care of that for us, making sure that whenever there is a chunk of memory (such as object) that is not referenced by any variable, that memory will be deallocated.
