 Lou Grant
Asner not only effectively adapted the original comedic character to the serious role of Lou Grant; off-screen the actor spoke out increasingly about social and political issues possibly causing some audience disaffection in its final years.
Scheduling was thus probably a "wash" as a factor; audiences were perhaps deterred more by the substantive issues explored which called for attentive involvement, unlike more passive TV entertainment.
Lou Grant is also significant in the history of MTM Productions as the "bridge" program between comedies such as The Mary Tyler Moore Show and later, more complex dramas such as Hill Street Blues.

Grant learned his trade as a copy boy at the former Los Angeles Examiner, where he spent most his time looking over shoulders in the art department.
Grant got a comic strip of his own shortly thereafter, a regular sports cartoon at the Milwaukee Sentinel he named "Swine Skin Gulch." He designed a logo of a seal swinging a bat for the San Francisco Seals Triple-A baseball club, and a fist with a lightning bolt for the Oakland Invaders football team.
Grant's works were highlighted in a 25-year retrospective at the Oakland Museum in 1980.

Eddriscoll: THE LOU GRANT EFFECT: Back
THE LOU GRANT EFFECT: Back in January, William Whittle made quite a splash in the Blogosphere with his essay on anti-war celebrities.
Whittle's phrase, "The Lou Grant Effect", is particularly apropos, because I used to love watching Asner as Lou--and could easily have pictured myself knocking back a few Scotches and discussing the good old days of journalism with the man.
Of course, that's not possible: Lou is fictional, and the real Ed Asner is a very, very different fellow from the all-American character he played in the 1970s, as Andrew Sullivan demonstrates.

Although CBS maintained the show died for lack of ratings, the network canceled his "Lou Grant" series after two major corporate sponsors - Vidal Sassoon and Kimberly Clark - withdrew their sponsorship over concerns about the star's political positions.
