The Lou Marsh Trophy named after a former sports editor of the Toronto Star, is awarded annually to Canada's best athlete, as decided by a committee of Toronto sports writers.
Louis Edwin Marsh died on 5 March 1936 after 43 years as a journalist, and was regarded as the dean of Canadian sports journalism.
His daily sports column in the Toronto Star from 1925 to 1936 was entitled "With Pick and Shovel," describing his tenacious ability to obtain an in-depth analysis of the sporting scene.

I expect Klassen to win it, and there are strong arguments in her favour -most of all, five of them, hanging around her neck.
The Lou Marsh has to go to Steve Nash because of the incredible feat of winning the NBA MVP for two consecutive years.

Believe it or not, and this should tell you a lot about the Canadian character, winning a major individual award in major-league baseball is the kiss of the death so far as winning the Lou Marsh goes.
None of the previous Hoser hardballers who won major awards -- the Cy Young or MVP -- won the Lou Marsh that same year, and all three were snubbed in favour of someone who participates in something that's barely a sport.
Actually, in all seriousness, if Cindy Klassen doesn't receive the Lou Marsh Award after what she did in winning five medals in Turin, they ought to abolish the award.
