Louang Namtha (Lao ຫລວງນໍ້າທາ) is both a province of Laos and the name of the provincial capital, located in the north of the country.
One of the best preserved and most spectacular pristine monsoon forest of all Laos can be found in Louang Namtha.
The main roads in Louang Namtha province connect Houaxai in Bokeo with Louang Namtha town and Oudomxay with Boten.

Straddling Route 3, four hours' drive northwest of Oudomxai, LOUANG NAMTHA was heavily contested during Laos's civil war, which is to say that it was razed to the ground.
The town's only real sight is the Louang Namtha Provincial Museum (Mon-Fri 8am-noon and 1-4pm; 500K), housed in a green-roofed building, behind the Kaysone monument, about 200m north of the post office.
There are displays of traditional hilltribe costumes and artefacts, a model depicting battle manoeuvres that took place in the area during the civil war and a rusty collection of weaponry.

The target villages are located in the Nam Ha subcatchment straddling Viengphukha - one of the poorest districts in Lao PDR with a poverty incidence rate of 90.3% - and Namtha districts, with combined population of 3,250 villagers.
The grant will support the construction of on-farm infrastructure, including new irrigation systems for 30 hectares of paddy fields as well as improved irrigation systems for another 65 hectares, that will convert their farming method from shifting cultivation to intensive permanent land-use agricultural method known as sedentary agriculture.
The Louang Namtha provincial government is the executing agency for the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2008.

By far the most popular route out of Louang Phabang is the road through Oudomxai and Louang Namtha to Muang Sing, a laid-back Tai Leu town that lies within the borders of the Golden Triangle, the world's most notorious opium-producing zone.
The usual direction of the loop is counter-clockwise (Louang Phabang-Oudomxai-Muang Sing-Xiangkok-Houayxai), but a clockwise route, heading north up the Mekong to Xiangkok first, could offer a more "Lao" experience.
