I was in Louangphabang over the January full moon–the last couple days of waxing and the first few of waning.
So the old royal capital of Laos–now a backwater outpost with just a trickle of Westerners passing through to see the wats and the palace of King Sisavangvong–was bathed in moonlight, the temples and the crumbling colonial architecture washed over in paleness, the palm branches dark silhouettes against the blue night.
My average day in Louangphabang was a little more esoteric, and poetic–lingering in front of a wat, the sky above blue and flawless.

Udon Thani is proposing the Phu Phra Bat Historical Park as another world heritage site, and is setting itself up as the hub of world heritage sites in Indochina.
Udon Thani Provincial Governor, Charuek Panyaphol, says that a major strategy of the province is to link up its Ban Chiang ancient ceramics site with Louangphabang of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Halong Bay of Vietnam, to be promoted as a package.
The idea was initiated in the previous governor’s term of office, with authorities of Lao PDR and Vietnam invited to visit the Ban Chiang site, and a commitment made to jointly develop the three sites together for international tourists.
