Thunder In The East, issued in 1985, was the first album to usher in a new era for Japan's heavy metal sensei Loudness.
Nevertheless, Loudness is a deservedly revered band and most of this material should be considered obligatory for heavy metal fans.
The prime directive of heavy metal would be to head out immediately and purchase the entire Loudness catalogue from 1981 to 1988.

  Heavy metal music
Heavy metal is an evolutionary product of pop, blues and "classical" music with a generally accepted life cycle of 20 years, from approximately 1970 to 1990.
Heavy metal is mainly blues-based, with pentatonic scales and a blues-like song structure; fl metal is based on classical music, even if at a first glance it seems to be only distorted guitars playing very fast a repeating melody.
Goth Metal fuses the bleak, icy atmospherics of goth rock with the loud guitars and aggression of heavy metal, finding the middle ground between the two styles in a melodramatic sense of theater and lyrical obsessions with religion and horror.

Ultimately, "pure" heavy metal would position itself at the periphery of pop culture, never quite at centre, and metal denizens contend that the move towards the centre was a commercialism that compromised both the artistic integrity of the form and the opportunity for messages to be taken seriously.
Heavy metal also had an important influence on grunge which, like punk, was partly a reaction to the perceived slickness and corporate nature of much rock music.

At the time it was still a novel concept, as while heavy metal had been quite popular since the late 60’s, the Japanese metal scene was almost entirely cover bands, with the areas near US military bases being frequent breeding grounds.
Around Loudness soon there was a thriving Japanese metal scene which also included Bow Wow, Earthshaker, Action, Kodomo Band, Pink Cloud, X Ray, Flatbacker/EZO and 44 Magnum, with who they both competed and cooperated.
The heavy metal survivors continue to soldier on, although these days have cut back on touring and are playing more to their Japanese audience.

Having failed to make any further headway in the States, despite their best efforts to play by the more commercial tastes of American metal audiences, it was obvious that guitarist Akira Takasaki intended 1992's simply-titled Loudness to serve as a big middle-finger to all those who had messed with his band in recent years.
Possibly the heaviest record of Loudness ' career, the album was pure aggression, but, sadly, little else.
New recruits Masaki Yamada (formerly vocalist for rival Japanese metal band EZO) and bassist Taiji Sawada do their part in helping Loudness take their first step back from the brink of extinction, but, truth be told, Takasaki really could have used a break to regroup and recharge his creative batteries.
