The roll of the acoustic engineer is to verify and evaluate potential solutions and often, as in the case with Bang and Olufsen, develope new technologies and ideas in order to solve a particular problem, such as very limited space.
The loudspeaker is a 2 or 3-way active loudspeaker with an acoustic lens and provides unrivalled imaging and sound performance.
It is an active 2-way loudspeaker with 2 x 250W of power driving a 5" woofer in a closed aluminium cabinet and 3/4" tweeter in an acoustic lens.

Acoustics is not about the 1/10th of 1% of the sound from the loudspeaker that is directly heard by the people.
Acoustics is about the other 99-9/10ths % of the sound, intercepting it and turning it into a sound that is fit to be heard.
It is the echoes and reverberation of sound due to the acoustics of the hall.

 North Manifest Loudspeaker System
Loudspeaker designers have debated for decades what is the most critical aspect of loudspeaker design; cabinet design, bass alignment, crossover slopes, phase linearity, etc. All of these elements are important to the success of the finished design, and all contribute to the most critical aspect: Voicing.
Voicing is the process of precisely balancing a loudspeaker's deep bass weight, low end punch, lower midrange robustness, midrange liquidity, upper midrange openness, and top end sparkle to create a system that is homogeneous in character from top to bottom and reproduces all forms of music and voice with the correct harmonic content.
The resulting acoustic response is flat from the low frequency measurement limit to 1060 Hz, 6dB down at 1.3kHz, and continues to roll of smoothly at 18dB/ocatve as frequency increases.

Loudspeaker Acoustics is the study (either scientific or pseudo-scientific) of the behaviour of the
loudspeaker and in particular the effort to create loudspeakers with good sound quality (either subjectively or objectively measured).
These include anechoic or simulated-anechoic measurements, resonance and standing-wave measurements etc. They have become significantly easier and more precise with the advent of computers, which allow detailed measurements of various aspects of loudspeaker behavior withiut the need to resort to (expensive) anechoic rooms.

Gershman Acoustics Cameleon loudspeaker by Neil Walker
You cannot allow the manufacturer's charming story make you hear a loudspeaker sound better than it is. And thus, it comes to this: these are very good loudspeakers.
The woofer is ported at the bottom of the loudspeaker cabinet at floor level.
Even with the cone, the loudspeaker is a little unstable on broadloom and could easily be upset by a child running into it, parental warnings notwithstanding.

 Room Acoustics
Practical loudspeakers are neither pure monopoles nor pure dipoles except at low frequencies where the acoustic wavelengths are large compared to the cabinet dimensions.
Because of the progressive acoustic short circuit between front and rear as the reproduced signal frequency decreases, the membrane of an open-baffle speaker has to move more air locally than the driver cone of a box speaker for the same SPL at the listening position.
I have come to the conclusion that real rooms are acoustically far too complex to predict the transmission of sound from speaker to listener, where the sound paths are in three dimensions, have direction and frequency dependent attenuation and diffusion, and can excite the inherent resonance modes of a room to unknown degrees.

Most conventional "bookshelf"-type loudspeakers are actually designed to be placed on a stand in the acoustic free-field; that is, with the rear of the loudspeaker a minimum of two feet from the back wall and its face three to four feet out.
The central design element of North Acoustics' Near Wall Specific™ loudspeaker systems is based on a fresh new look at the performance vs. placement issue: by fixing one boundary condition and optimizing the loudspeaker’s performance for that boundary condition, the owner then has considerable placement freedom as long as the first boundary condition is kept.

To avoid these problems, we can mount the loudspeaker in an infinite baffle, in which case it radiates into the "half space" in front of the baffle as a monopole.
We specify sensitivity of a loudspeaker in terms of dB SPL for 2.83 V input. The sound pressure level is measured on-axis in anechoic conditions at a distance of 1 metre from the loudspeaker.
Such a strategy is achieved by the "phase inverter" family of loudspeaker enclosures, which couple front and back radiation from the low frequency unit(s) through an acoustic phase inverting network.

The VISATON NoBox BB Loudspeaker Kit Review By Dick Olsher
One of the main reasons the QUAD-57 electrostatic loudspeaker, or for that matter any other good planar speaker, sound so natural (i.e., non-boxy) in the midrange is directly due to the absence of boxy cavity resonances that serve to obscure midrange detail.
It has been argued by some (e.g., Gradient Loudspeakers) that because a dipole radiator excites fewer room modes relative to a conventional box speaker with its omni-directional bass output, bass response at the listening seat should exhibit a smoother response.
While it is not clear to me that this represents a valid conclusion for all rooms and setups, one thing is certain: a dipole woofer is bound to sound different relative to that of a box speaker.

The really neat part, though, was that the sonic images within the soundstage led lives of their own, deliciously detached from the physical presence of the speaker enclosures.
These shifts could be due to the large woofer excursions incurred with use of the sub amp, or they could be the result of voicing differences between the sub and main amps, but in any event they are subtle, sounding like a barely perceptible thickening of the sound in the bottom octave and a half.
