Lough Derg is the largest lake on the Shannon, stretching for 22 miles from Portumna in the north to Killaloe in the south.
Historically this has been one of the great trout fisheries, though the fishing was mainly concentrated on mayfly time.
The flooded area between Killaloe and O'Briens Bridge is dangerous for boats, with a lot of under water hazards, but holds a good stock of trout.
