Ennell gets the heaviest hatches of any lough in the country and species that hatch there is unusually large, with the pupa measuring almost.75 inch (19mm).
The hatch distribution is quite localised and tends to be concentrated in the middle areas of the Lough.
The important areas are along the Keoltown Reeds, the southern part of the Lough from Malachys Island to Lady's Island, Bog Island and along by the Robinstown Shore.

It is a limestone lough, incredibly rich, and while it has some feeder streams it is mainly spring fed. The duckfly hatches in late March and early April and the favoured fly patterns at the time are: Sooty Olive, Fiery Brown, Bibio, Invicta, Connemara Black and the Jungle Cock Spider.
Lough Conn is regarded as a very free-taking Lough and is a great favourite with those who like to fish "traditional-style" in front of the boat, and because trout take the wet fly so freely very little dapping takes place there.

One part of the volume is devoted to The Crannog Archaeology Project (CAP) and Lough Ennell, Co. Westmeath, a project that Bob co-directed with the National Museum of Ireland in the 1980s.
