Lough Carra: Light hatches of duckfly brought some trout to the surface but with very few anglers on the lough, hardly any trout were caught.

It is tempting to suggest that a beginner on Lough Mask should come at Mayfly time, but in reality good fishing depends more on weather conditions than on the trout's feeding habits, so either April or September can provide the wind and cloud required to ensure good daytime fly fishing.
The most popular (and effective) way to fish for trout on Lough Mask is with a floating or slow sinking line on a ten or eleven foot rod.

The season for brown trout on Lough Corrib opens on February 15th (the same as Lough Mask) and trout are usually caught on fly from the very first day of the season.
Fishing the wet fly is good on Lough Mask in April and during the Mayfly period, which is usually from May 20th, or a little later sometimes, to the first week in June.
Lough Carra is a late lough so little fishing takes place there until the first week of May, when the Mayfly usually appears.

Lough Mask is famous for its large ferox trout and every season anglers take a number of these great trout, mostly all over 10 lb and nearly always to trolled baits.

It is a limestone lough, incredibly rich, and while it has some feeder streams it is mainly spring fed. The duckfly hatches in late March and early April and the favoured fly patterns at the time are: Sooty Olive, Fiery Brown, Bibio, Invicta, Connemara Black and the Jungle Cock Spider.
