  Lough Swilly Page
Originally to have been called the Lough Foyle and Lough Swilly Railway Company, the company was incorporated with its current title in June 1853, with the aim of building a railway line to connect Lough Foyle and Lough Swilly (on either side of the Inishowen Peninsula in North Donegal).
Since the 1960s Lough Swilly has operated a lot of official school buses in North Donegal, and a separate fleet of buses is kept for this.

 Background to Save the Swilly
Lough Swilly Preservation Group is informed by the Aquaculture Licences Appeals Board (ALAB) that their appeal has failed against granting a new oyster cultivation licence to an applicant who had previously abandoned his original shellfish farming site (for mussels) in Lough Swilly.
Lough Swilly Wild Oyster Development Association chairman, Alex Carlin, says Lough Swilly, one of only four Bonamia-free oyster fisheries in Ireland, is at serious risk of cross-contamination due to the movement of trawlers and other vessels, such as mussel-seed carriers, to and from Lough Foyle.
We have not objected to all aquaculture developments in Lough Swilly, but what we have stressed is that no aquaculture developments should be allowed without a full assessment of the carrying capacity of the bay for any such activities, and for their cumulative effects.

Lough Swilly (Loch SĂșilĂ­ in Irish) in Ireland is a fjord-like body of water lying between the western side of the Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal and the rest of northern Donegal.
A French fleet carrying Wolfe Tone and troops to assist in 1798 rebellion was intercepted and defeated at the entrance to Lough Swilly in October 1798.
The Lough was used as an anchorage by the Royal Navy during World War I.

 Mulroy Bay
Lough Swilly is the longest marine inlet in north-west Ireland and is very different in character to Mulroy Bay, from which it is separated by the narrow Fanad peninsula.
There are extensive intertidal mud flats along the shores of the inner lough, and large banks of coarse sand and gravel in 10m or less in the middle portion, opposite the town of Buncrana.
The largest centres are the towns of Buncrana (population 2800) on the east coast of Lough Swilly and Letterkenny (population 3500) at the head of Lough Swilly (1971 census, Royal Irish Academy 1979).

Six people, including an eight-year-old boy, are safe and well after being rescued from Lough Swilly in County Donegal after their boat sank yesterday evening.
The Lough Swilly Lifeboat was launched and a rescue helicopter was dispatched from the Finner camp in Donegal.
The distress call was also picked up by a boat from the garda water unit, which happened to be carrying out routine patrols in the area at the time.

The Save The Swilly campaign has recently described the decision to grant yet another salmon-farming licence in Lough Swilly, this time in Ballymastocker Bay near Portsalon, as short-sighted and potentially tragic for one of only two Blue Flag beaches in the area.

Government departments, agencies and users of Lough Swilly must work together if the lough is to develop and prosper, according to University of Ulster researcher Dr Andrew Cooper.

So successful is it that in the summer, 2004 a new service began across the adjacent Lough Swilly in Lough Swilly where the same company started a summer only service in May 2004 from Rathmullen (Donegal) to Buncrana (also in Inishowen, Donegal).
Fot the service, Lough Foyle Ferry Co. purchased Stedingen, built in Germany in 1972 for use on the River Weser, and laid up after the opening of a tunnel on her route.
She was renamed Foyle Rambler, and is capable of carrying 20 cars and 200 passengers.
