Line facts - Transport for London
At the new Greenford station, the entrance hall was at ground level but the railway was on a viaduct, and thus became the first, and only, station on the London Underground to have escalators leading from street level UP to the trains.
Other tube railway promotions of the time were also producing poor responses, and none of the early tube railways were able to be built without the aid of substantial support from either a finance company or a contractor.
Tube railways built subsequently had adopted automatic signalling, and under the new ownership automatic signalling was installed in 1913, partly as part of a cost cutting exercise - there no longer needed to be as many staff on each train.

The Railway Tavern is conveniently right next to Loughton station, and their friendly staff served up a fine set of sandwiches.
The station was opened in 1856, with the line being electrified and incorporated into London Underground (Central Line eastern extension) on the 9th September 1949.
At Epping (one stop up from Theydon Bois), tube passengers used to be able to enjoy a ride on a delightfully anachronistic country branch line to the small town of Ongar.

 Ongar Railway
Under these plans, the Central Line of the tube railway was to be extended from Liverpool Street through Bethnal Green, Mile End, and Stratford to join the branch just south of Leyton, from where it would run over the existing tracks to Loughton, Epping, and Ongar.
This new line was initially single track, leaving the ECR's branch just south of its original terminus and requiring the construction of a new station at Loughton; the old being converted to a goods yard and sidings.
In 1892/93 the line from Loughton to Epping was doubled to provide better services for the expanding towns of Epping and Theydon Bois, especially during the summer weekends when excursions were operated from the East End to the beauties of Epping Forest.
